Drunk Park aka Seb Godfrey Interview by DonutChocula
Drunk Park is now the solo alias for Graphic Designer & Illustrator, Seb Godfrey. Since relocating to London in 2006, the ever expanding client base for the Drunk Park studio is growing. With his distinct illustration and design style carving out a niche in todays music & fashion scene, Seb has gone on to have his artwork featured internationally in numerous books, magazines & exhibitions.
That is for you Design?
Drunk Park started as a skate park in Hobart, Australia from '97 - '99. It was situated in an unused warehouse space above the Drunken Admiral Restaurant, hence the name 'Drunk Park'. After we had to shut the park down, I decided to keep the name for my solo Illustration & Design alias, and now run a small studio in London.
To use tools to create?
Pencil on paper first & foremost, then a scanner & Adobe Illustrator.
Mac or PC?
Mac all the way.
Influences are everywhere, but I'd have to say it all started with after-school cartoons & animation. Shows like 'Trapdoor', 'Inspector Gadget' & 'Danger Mouse' (to name just a few) were definitely a huge influence with character development & the use bold bright colours. These days I find myself gathering influences from real people. Walking the city streets is a great way to gathering character inspiration. Especially where I am at the moment in London, this place is full quirks.
One Magazine / One type / One Color...
Sneaker Freaker / You can't beat hand generated type for originality / pure cyan!
What music are you listening while you work?
Hmm, right now - Black Grass's new album 'Three', Tippers' new album 'Wobble Factor', plenty of Bonobo, RJD2, Quantic... the list goes on.
What was your experience with the Sneaker Lovers Bible "Sneaker Freaker"?
Woody (Sneaker Freaker head honcho) saw some work I had up in an exhibition in Hobart & decided to drop me a line asking if I'd be interested doing a page for the mag. That turned into a few other bits and pieces over later issues. It was great fun as always.
Upcoming "Drunk Park" projects, exhibitions...
I'm getting ready for the latest installment of 'Secret Wars'. An illustration battle held at a bar called Juno on Shoreditch High St. (East London). My first heat is on the 18th of October '08, so be sure to come on down if you're in the area! I also just finished a 3:30min music clip animation with a good ol' friend of mine Joe Hamilton. It's for a track called 'Catnip' by Mike Monday, to promote his new album released on Om Records this month (September 08). You can check it out at www.drunkpark.com.
