STEVE POWERS "Semaphores of The Soul" at ALICE Gallery

Exhibition Dates: 29.01 2009 > 07.03.2009
VERNISSAGE: Thursday 29.01 2009 - 18:00 to 22:00
In the last 7 years Steve Powers has created a new way of painting, a hybrid of text and image that functions as a screen shot of his mind. The machinations of social interactions, the struggle to understand ourselves, dumb jokes, and the futility of changing a world that is perfectly happy with destroying itself are all recurring themes in Powers' work. For his debut show in Belgium, Powers is pulling together the best work of the last 7 years, and putting forth a dozen new paintings to effectively map out the area he has claimed for himself in his paintings. It is the complicated world of ourselves.Alice Gallery welcomes you to look at you up close. Translations gladly provided!

BORN TO CRY Object Paintings by Aaron Rose at Hope Gallery

Saturday, January 17 (7-10pm) - February 11
at Hope Gallery
Born to Cry is Aaron Rose's first solo exhibition since 1992 (the show that opened the first Alleged Gallery space on New York's Ludlow street). Rose paints on functional objects including briefcases, suitcases, guitars, a table, a chair, a record player, a marching band bass drum, lamps, a ceramic skull, and some surprises.
All the works are rooted in some sort of mysticism, be it personal transformations, wishes, magic spells or confessions. Not simply exercises in design and typography, each work evokes personal experience.
Rose says: "The title comes from my own personal emotional battles as well as my general feeling that we're all put on this earth to struggle and with that comes tears. I personally don't trust people who don't cry, because I believe tears always lead to some kind of redemption."
