Walrus TV Artist Feature: Ricky Powell Interview from “Dithers”

Ricky Powell. Really, what is there to be said about this legendary photographer that hasn't already been noted? His shots of New York in the 80s are timeless. His photo subjects ranged from friends on the block; to up-and-coming musicians, artists, and celebrities; to the then high-and-mighty caught around NYC. Indeed, Ricky has covered it all. Now, for the first time available to the public for free, Walrus TV provides a nine minute video from Dithers featuring the man, himself, discussing things from back in the day as well as giving insight on some of his favorite shots.

The Ricky Powell “Animal Lover Posse” Win a Ricky Powell Photo of RUN DMC

As seen in the interview, Ricky Powell loves animals, especially his cat Blackberry and he’s the founder of the well-established and long-standing “Animal Lover Posse.” In the fourth contest slated for 2009, Upper Playground is giving away a Ricky Powell photo of RUN DMC in Paris from 1987. The photo is signed by Ricky Powell, is framed and measures at 3 feet by 2 feet. To enter, all you have to do is submit a photo of an animal on the Upper Playground Facebook Fan Page – it can be anything – your pet, a pigeon on the sidewalk, a rat on the street – whatever. The person who submits the best animal photo will win the photo of Run DMC in Paris/1987. The contest is open for 2 weeks and a winner will be announced on Wednesday, May 13th. For details, rules and more information please visit the feature on UpperPlayground.com.

Sam Flores "Ego, Addiction and Other Bedtime Stories" at Subliminal Projects Gallery

OPENING RECEPTION:
SATURDAY, MAY 2ND, 8-11PM

EXHIBITION DATES:
MAY 2ND - MAY 30TH, 2009

In his show Ego, Addiction, and Other Bedtime Stories, Sam Flores tackles what is perhaps one of the most pervasive themes in human existence: the struggle between light and dark. Through color and contrast, Flores addresses those parts of our selves that seek to hide behind the protective mask of acceptance while our inner demons claw at us from the inside. "There is a constant war being waged in the fight for balance," says Flores, "to determine which side of us, good or bad, will win out in any given moment." Yet despite the eternal conflict, Flores never hesitates to remind us of the potential for beauty to shine through - even in our darkest hours.

Mike Giant & Dalek at Magda Danysz Gallery

April 25th - May 23rd, 2009
Opening on saturday April 25th, 2009 from 6 to 9 PM

The Magda Danysz gallery is pleased to welcome two major artists from the street art culture who have developed a style of their own: Dalek & Mike Giant.

Though they have very different styles they talk about the same culture, the same influences, the same world. Dalek is one of the artists who as Shepard Fairey, Dave Kinsey, and Twist (aka Barry McGee) is taking the old school styles of graffiti and while exposing the work towhole new audiences at the same time. Mike Giant has added the whole tattoo culture to his graffiti background. He started writing in 1989. Early on, he was influenced by his graffiti partners a lot, as well as by writers like Twist, Rem, and KR. A habit he has kept from his graffiti years as now, Mike Giant uses words as the building blocks of language.

ANTI-SOCIAL, by SPIDERxDEATH at China Heights Gallery

This Friday night, April 24:
ANTI-SOCIAL, by SPIDERxDEATH

A collection of illustrations Spider has constructed over the years for punk/metal acts around the world, ranging from 7" covers, Lp covers and posters.
Each piece of work has endured a heavy dose of stippling, like a junkie scratching the page with OCD. The feelings viewers will get from these images will take them back to the first punk show they ever attended (or didn't attend) and remember the colourful atmosphere of getting thrown up on, losing teeth in the pit and recovering from alcohol poisoning.

A specially produced run of prints will be available at the show.

Walrus TV Artist Feature: SLICK

In this week’s edition of Walrus TV, graffiti legend SLICK tells us how he earned his name while he was in Catholic school. SLICK was a troublemaker as a kid, and it was his penchant for vandalism that actually lead him to art school.

SLICK, born Richard P. Wyrgatsch II, was raised in Hawaii and then moved to Los Angeles when he was 18 years old to pursue a career in commercial art and escape prosecution for vandalism. It was at Otis Parsons where he stumbled into his crew K.II.S (Kill to Succeed), one of LA’s most respected crews. It may have been his years as an airbrush artist in the 80’s, his formal training at Art Center or just his intuitive sense for dynamic composition that set his work apart from the rest in this fame driven sport we refer to as bombing. SLICK is a founder of Third Rail Clothing, Fuct, Shaolin Worldwide and more recently Dissizit!

He’s also worked on film projects including Bill & Ted’s II, Charlie’s Angels, Ocean’s 12, Fantastic 4 and music projects such as Pharcyde and Booyaa Tribe albums and Ice Cube, Ice T and Red Hot Chilli Peppers videos. After all these years, SLICK is still bombing, but now it’s mostly on canvases for galleries and legal mural commissions worldwide. Proving graff writers never die, they just get bufft.

Trust Fun & Kris Moyes "Glory Holes" at Monster Children Gallery

Trust Fun & Kris Moyes - Glory Holes

Opening night: Thursday 23RD APRIL 6.00PM
Exhibition continues from 24TH APRIL - 9TH MAY, 2009.

Award winning Australian designers Trust Fun! and international director Kris Moyes will present a series of works titled ‘Glory Holes’ at Monster Children Gallery from April 24, in an exhibition which explores the increasingly blurred line between art and commerce.

Glory Holes will explore the ideas of the Animal, the Vegetable and the Mineral from a cosmic, mystical and aesthetic angle - all with tongue planted firmly in cheek. The space will be filled with pieces covering a range of mediums including high quality digital prints, hand screen-printed glass, video projections and sculpture.

Many of the pieces in the exhibition have their origins in the concept stages of album covers, tour posters, music videos and marketing ideas that were later rejected by clients as either ‘too weird’, ‘too difficult’ or ‘too confusing’.

THE POCKET SHOW / Miniatures by JAYBO at Nancy Victor Gallery

Nancy Victor Gallery is proud to present...
THE POCKET SHOW / Miniatures by JAYBO

Private View - Thursday 23 April, 6.30 - 9pm

In France 'Jaybo aka Monk' was a graffiti artist before he moved to Berlin in the 80's, "the pocket show" is what it says on the packet... Based on the size of a match boxes and around anything I could find in my pocket. I have always been distracted by the left overs, by things lying on the street, colour bits on the concrete, broken forms, missed parts and lost items. Already as a kid I always collected what I found without any foresight other than knowing I could use them one day.

There are burnt matchboxes, sculptures, used coke cans, elastic bands, smashed cigarette paintings and more... So don't forget to bring your magnifying glass.

C.H.U.D.Z. Alex Barry, Richard Colman, Josh Slater at Cinders Gallery

April 24th - May 24th 2009
Opening Recpetion Friday April 24th 7-10pm

Cinders Gallery is proud to present C.H.U.D.Z., a 3 person show featuring new paintings, drawings, and collages. The title is a mysterious acronym that likens itself to the cult film C.H.U.D. aka "Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dweller", where toxic waste has mutated people into flesh-eating zombies that come up from the sewers to feed. Certainly B-movie monsters, science fiction, conspiracy theories, secret societies and the arcane knowledge of the underground all play an influential role in each of these artists' work but it also reveals their collective sense of humor as old friends, as a kind of tongue in cheek term for their new works or even a term of endearment for each other.

All three artists create whole worlds of their own iconography amidst a mysterious, playful and at times dystopic backdrop of a fantastical future.
