Walrus TV Artist Feature: WK Interact from “The Run Up”

The exciting thing for me, it’s not the final piece—it’s where I’m going to put the piece…like the street and what’s interactive with what’s surrounding me.
-WK Interact

New York based street artist WK Interact’s work is inspired by the concepts of movement, gesture, and place. His site-specific pieces have garnered notoriety through the obvious concern for spatial context with which he approaches each location and through his fluid depictions of figures in motion. Blurring lines between street art, fine art, and design, WK Interact has exhibited in galleries internationally and collaborated with brands such as Nike, Adidas, and BMW. Watch the interview from “The Run Up” available for the first time to the public for free, on Walrus TV.

WK Interact was born in 1969 in Caen, France. He currently lives and works in New York. At a young age, WK was interested with the human body in motion, his paintings of figures frozen in a flight of movement reflects this infatuation. WK site-determines his placements by finding an appropriate location first, then his imagery is chosen specifically with a concern for encounters in an urban environment or "interactions" (as the artist indicates in his pseudonym).

Jeff Koons "Popeye Series" at Serpentine Gallery

Jeff Koons:
Popeye Series
2 July – 13 September 2009

The Serpentine Gallery presents the first survey of a key series of works by the celebrated American artist Jeff Koons. Working in thematic series since the early 1980s, Koons has explored notions of consumerism, taste, banality, childhood and sexuality. The Popeye Series incorporates ideas that are central to the artist’s work, including surreal combinations of everyday objects, art historical references and children’s toys. The paintings in the Popeye Series combine disparate found images with images of the inflatables and readymades used in the sculptures, while the sculptures themselves continue Koons’s interest in juxtaposing cast aluminium exact replicas of inflatable pool toys with other readymade objects.

Jeff Koons was born in York, Pennsylvania, in 1955. His work has been widely exhibited internationally and his most recent solo exhibitions include presentations at the Château de Versailles, France; Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, all in 2008. Koons lives and works in New York.

Specter Print Release @ Show & Tell Gallery

Show & Tell Gallery just released 4 unique print editions by street artist Specter.
You can check them out here.

The pieces are all based on studies of projects that he executes on the streets, 3 of which are from his "Discarded" project and one from his "If I Saw You In Heaven" project.

Specter continues to break boundaries with his unique style of street art, creating outdoor site-specific interventions in an attempt to shift the dynamics in public space. With his use of renegade sculptures and installations, he aims to deconstruct established notions of the built environment meanwhile illuminating its potential as creative co-conspirator. Although at times focusing solely on sculpture, Specter's body of work is versatile, often integrating both two and three dimensional concepts in a variety of mediums, and more often than not articulating subversive humor and hints of delicious irony.

Specter's roots are firmly planted in graffiti. Growing up in Montreal, Quebec, he started writing over a decade ago and co-founded the infamous "Kops Crew" in 1998, which has grown to be one of Montreal's most legendary and publicized graffiti crews. His attachment to graffiti is still apparent in his work; abandoned buildings and forgotten environments continue to be a main source of inspiration. Although his artistic practice began in Montreal, Specter has worked and lived in many different cities, most recently residing in Toronto, Ontario and currently in Brooklyn, New York. He has also introduced his practice to the fine art world with gallery representation in Toronto and Brooklyn as well as past exhibitions in institutions such as the Royal Ontario Museum.

ICE COLD

JUNE 27 - AUGUST 5, 2009

This is another intergalactic ballad de Spaztek: he just landed⎯its another hot Texas night - at a dancehall between Poteet and Bandera - Spaztek has been walking for 300 miles and his boots are down to flappy chanklas - the sounds of cumbias calientes and the soft sexy whispers of mala lovers fill his brain - something tells him este noche is gonna get picoso to the max.

Live performance by Cruz Ortiz @ 8:15PM, June 27, 2009
Spaztek Stuka Krash: Spaztek has been traveling for 8 earth days⎯all of his navigation instruments are not working⎯his rickety Stuka Spaceship has just crested over the Olympus Mons mountain range⎯everything is going wrong⎯the radio might be his only hope.

Ortiz's work has been exhibited at Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Artpace (San Antonio), Ev+a (Limerick, Ireland), The Louvre (Paris) and ARCO (Madrid). INVADER "Top IO" Solo Exhibition at Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Invader
Top IO
Solo Exhibition
Jun 27 thru Jul 25, 2009
Opening Reception - Saturday, June 27th 7-9pm

Jonathan LeVine Gallery is pleased to present Top 10, a solo exhibition of new works by the Parisian street artist known as Invader. Returning to the gallery for his first solo show in New York, Top 10 marks a highly anticipated event for this internationally celebrated artist. Known for using mosaic tiles to re-create popular characters from vintage 8-bit video games (such as Space Invaders and Pac-Man) on the streets of cities around the world, the artist’s individual mosaics are carefully cataloged after placement in context to their surrounding environment.

Top 10 introduces a new series of original two and three-dimensional works featuring the artist’s signature pixel-based aesthetic, created in mediums such as mosaic tile and rubik’s cubes, which clearly translate the concept of pixilation (the division of visual information in digital format). Invader is the first artist to bring pixels to life, both in the physical world and in the art world. Echoing the neo-Impressionist painting technique of pointillism, with a contemporary voice, his evolved methods bring the composite image concept into the digital age.

The show title Top 10 references popular music, as the artist has selected what he believes are the top ten album covers of his generation as subjects for re-interpretation using his own innovative technique of Rubikcubism. The term Rubikcubism is used to describe an art movement of which Invader is believed to be the originator, using Rubik’s Cubes (a 3-D mechanical puzzle game popular in the 1980’s). This exhibition also includes large-scale mixed-media sculptures in bright primary colors and a video installation of projected time-lapse footage, which reveals the geometric complexity of the artist’s incredible process in creating pieces in this show. WK Interact "Motion Portrait" Solo Exhibition at Jonathan Levine

Motion Portrait
Solo Exhibition

Opening Reception - Saturday, June 27th 7-9pm
June 27, 2009 through July 25, 2009

Jonathan LeVine Gallery is pleased to announce Motion Portrait, a solo exhibition of new works by the New York based French street artist known as WK Interact.

WK’s ephemeral artwork includes wheat pastes and large-scale murals of figures in high-contrast black and white; each piece is site-specific and his imagery is always placed in accordance with its surrounding environment. Known for his elaborate creative process, scouting and sketching locations, staging models for photo shoots, and distorting their image on a copy machine, the artist creates exaggerated visual effects (or illusions) to convey rapid movement. In an age where the evolution of civilization seems to be accelerating at a speed of development—much like the figures in WK’s work—faster than we are able to process the change, the artist conveys themes of violence and mortality through a strikingly graphic and gritty aesthetic, one that is internationally recognized and regarded as distinctly his own.

Walrus TV Artist Feature: Tiffany Bozic Interview from “Dithers”

People are completely getting numb…we’re losing our ability to even care about one another.
But all I’m saying is we’ve got to be willing to just recognize and not accept that…
-Tiffany Bozic

Tiffany Bozic views her artwork as a means of communication, a way to work through questions, present commentary, and offer her experiences to others. Heavily inspired by nature and science and laden with Art Nouveau elegance, her works are built of what she refers to as “complex simplicity.” A distinct balance, intricacy, and acute interest in symmetry run through her pieces. Tiffany Bozic’s work has been displayed in exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe. Watch the interview from “Dithers,” available for the first time to the public for free, on Walrus TV.

Upper Playground & Sam Flores "Dragon Boy" Vinyl Figure

Upper Playground & Sam Flores Dragon Boy
Vinyl Figure Available for Presale

Upper Playground is proud to present the newest in a series of vinyl figures slated for release in 2009 – Dragon Boy designed by Sam Flores. Known for his signature characters and fusing them with Asian motifs, Flores’ Dragon Boy fuses his influences in this new groundbreaking figure. “I've been traveling [to]…a lot of places in Asia; I pick up a lot of things, styles and aesthetics. I'm infatuated with the beauty and architecture…the lines and attention to detail of everything.” (Interview with Modart).

Unlike most other vinyl figures, the Dragon Boy is made up of 3 pieces creating the illusion of the dragon floating through the clouds. The figure measures 10” tall and the head, midsection and tail feature extremely detailed gradient blends. Dragon Boy will come housed in a double-sided window box with a scenic insert card. Limited to 500 units, Dragon Boy is slated to release in early September but is available for presale beginning Monday, June 15, 2009, on the Upper Playground web store.

BEN FROST "Plague Landscapes" at Brooklynite Gallery in New York

BEN FROST "PLAGUE LANDSCAPES"
JUNE 20 - JULY 18 - OPENING RECEPTION JUNE 20, 7-9PM EASTERN (19:00 UK)

LIVE STREAMING COVERAGE RIGHT HERE.
CLICK ON OUR LIVE TV LINK.

Coming this summer, Australian artist Ben Frost unleashes “Plague Landscapes”, an exhibition of hyper-infused fresh new work at Brooklynite Gallery.

Geographically speaking, Australia is a planet all it's own. And just maybe that is the reason, and the ONLY reason, why Ben Frost hasn't already taken his seat in the front row of relevant Pop Artists working today.

If imagery had physical weight, Frost's canvases would come crashing down onto the gallery floor. His work is jam-packed with so much skewed pop culture imagery, his twisted characters appear to be fighting for face time. His work is overwhelming and reminiscent of the billboards and video screens we are forced to view in a 'Clockwork Orange' like fashion everyday ---yet far more savory.

Looking at Ben Frost's work-- You think you've seen it somewhere before, --but wait, that's others trying to duplicate a style he's perfected long ago. Sure Frost's arsenal includes the icons and bubble gum color we've come to expect, but now turn up hue, turn up the saturation and add a story-line to that blockbuster summer movie-- It's Ultra Pop! --BANG! BANG!

Don't believe us? Come see "Plague Landscapes" for yourself. . . Just watch your feet.

Jottobots art show opening
J. Otto Seibold at GR2

June 13 - July 8, 2009
Reception: Saturday, June 13, 6:30 -10:00

Giant Robot is proud to host Jottobots, an art show featuring new work by J. Otto Seibold. Showcased in children's books such as Mr. Lunch, Penguin Dreams, and A Trip to the Getty, the pop-art illustration work of J. Otto Seibold is instantly identifiable and immensely influential. The San Francisco-based artist was among the first wave of modern computer artists to make names for themselves by using vector illustration to craft a hugely popular retro folk style.

Considering himself a "digital outsider artist," Seibold also makes personal work that combines stencils, spray paints, and paint pens to create an organic take on his hyper colored, multi layered, and surreal style.
For the opening, a special game featuring Seibold's artwork is being developed by Kyle Pulver of the Attract Mode indie videogame collective. In the 5-minute experience, the player controls a small robot (Jottobot) with the ability to shoot, jump, and fly with the aid of a jetpack. There will be a combo-scoring system and a high-score list, so art show attendees can find out who is the best at the end of the night.
