MISHKA -Keep Watch Vol. X: Major Laser T-Shirt

Keep Watch Vol. X: Major Laser T-Shirt Available Now!

Mishka produced a limited run Major Lazer tee designed by Skinny Digital. Long time supporters of Mishka and often considered family, the t-shirt was a perfect way to compliment the Major Lazer curated mix. Ten volumes and approximately one year later, the mixes have greatly exceeded all expectations. As a result, weʼve decided to celebrate the 10th installment in a special way. For our tenth volume, we enlisted the services of electro-reggae-dancehall virtuoso Major Lazer. And to coincide with the special mix.

Download Keep Watch Vol. X: Major Lazer

Major Lazer is a Jamaican commando who lost his arm in the secret Zombie War of 1984. The US military rescued him and repurposed experimental lazers as prosthetic limbs. Since then Major Lazer has been a hired renegade soldier for a rogue government operating in secrecy underneath the watch of M5 and the CIA. His cover is that of a dancehall night club owner from Trinidad and he enlisted the help of long-time allies and uber-producers, Diplo and Switch, to produce his first LP. His true mission is to protect the world from the dark forces of evil that live just under the surface of a civilized society. He fights vampires and various monsters, parties hard, and has a rocket powered skateboard.

Walrus TV -Word to Mother’s “Young Mind, Old Soul” at FIFTY24SF Gallery

“It’s called ‘Young Mind, Old Soul’…It’s about retaining the essence of youth but sort of living
with an appreciation for yesterday.”

-Word to Mother

In “Young Mind, Old Soul,Word to Mother combines his acute reverence for memory with the freedom and restlessness of youth. His appreciation for the past is evident not only through his collection of found objects, but also through the hand lettering and weathered texture he applies to them. Integrating the past with the present, Word to Mother’s paintings organically merge fleeting adolescence with nostalgic recollection. Upper Playground’s Alexander Tarrant put this short piece together of Word To Mother describing his own work and you can view it now on Walrus TV. “Young Mind, Old Soul” is on exhibit at FIFTY24SF until Thursday, July 30, 2009.

Word to Mother is based in England and went to art school for illustration after developing a passion for graffiti at a young age. By consistently filling his sketchbook with social observations, he uniquely articulates his style with the use of texture, typography, signature characters, and salvaged wood canvases. With layering techniques that look like they took years, Word to Mother ensures both the painting and canvas compliment each other’s natural beauty.

V1 Gallery presents LA PETITE MORT A solo show By ANIKA LORI

V1 Gallery presents

LA PETITE MORT
A solo show By ANIKA LORI

Opening Friday July 31. 2009. From 17 – 22.
August 1. – August 22. 2009.

At present time Anika Lori is one of the most treasured young Danish artists. She used to live on the dark side of the moon – but lately she has rotated with the planet and has now turned up on its bright side. In her exhibition La Petite Mort, Anika Lori explores what the dark was hiding in its cracks and crevices. An old friend of Anika’s, the Crying Child, has now been replaced by a number of masks – physical as well as symbolic – which she both mounts and let fall. This is done in her search of the crux – or in the realization of its non-existence.

La Petite Mort is like a diary of images, a playful treasure trove of identities, of feelings and frustrations, of repressions and realizations as well as of vulnerable fascination. Old cut-off hair from Anika’s mom, a dress Anika outgrew, her son’s toys, a lock of hair from her boyfriend and personal secrets conquers the colorful canvases, collages and sculptures with memories, melancholy, longing, sorrow and happiness. Objects, that leave their formal existence and become integrated in a different universe and its galaxies of impressions and expressions of the multiplicity and the meaninglessness of life, for better or worse.

Anika Lori was born in 1975 and grew up in Aarhus, Denmark. After three years working Danish artist Tal R’s assistant, she had her first solo exhibition at V1 Gallery in 2006. Hereafter she has been the it-girl on group shows and art fairs throughout the world. Her last solo exhibition was at Union Gallery, London, in 2008. La Petite Mort is Anika’s second solo exhibition at V1 Gallery.

Walrus TV Artist Feature: Jeff Soto Interview from “The Run Up”

There’s always that theme of conflict, of man versus nature, and usually nature seems to win.
-Jeff Soto

Jeff Soto’s intricate paintings are built of robotic figures and sprawling, organic landscapes. As a prominent member of the Lowbrow (or Pop Surrealism) art movement, the influence of graffiti, pop culture, and comics is quickly apparent. Yet nature always remains the crux of his work, as he’s interested in the ways we are affecting our environment. Jeff Soto’s work has appeared as commissioned illustrations and in galleries throughout the United States and Europe. Watch the interview from “The Run Up,” available for the first time to the public for free, on Walrus TV.

Through striking visual imagery, Jeff Soto communicates profound visions and fears, nostalgia of his youth, and themes of love, lust, and hope. Soto’s distinct color palette, subject matter, technique and bold themes resonate with a growing audience. Inspired by childhood toys, the colorful lifestyle of skateboarding and graffiti, hip-hop and popular culture, Soto’s representational work is simultaneously accessible and stimulating.

Environmental issues also take precedent for Soto, who is concerned with conflict of humans trying to harness, or take advantage of nature. His paintings exude this tension, as robotic creatures duel, organic tentacles and flower bouquets thrive, and black smog looms amidst floating, ominous skulls.

In 2002, Soto graduated with Distinction from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. He currently lives in Southern California, with his wife Jennifer and daughter Shannon.

Stussy x REAS "Wayback Throwback" collection - Delivery 1

Stussy x Reas Delivery 1

Todd James is an internationally known artist and designer who spent the bulk of his childhood and adolescence watching cartoons, eating cereal and writing graffiti. Through his work on NYC's subway trains as REAS, he mastered the practical challenges of good design at an early age.

James's commercial works include logos for clients such as The Beastie Boys, The Source, Eminem, Mobb Deep and Redman. These logos remain some of rap music's most enduring icons. As the Puppet Designer and a Production Designer on Comedy Central's hit show Crank Yankers, James's singular aesthetic sensibility was introduced to a television audience with great success.

On the fine art side, work by James has been shown at the 2000 Venice Biennale, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, the Tate Museum in Liverpool, Dietch Projects in NYC and the Beautiful Losers museum tour. Most recently James has been making paintings for his second show in Copenhagen at V1 gallery and working on new projects for Adult Swim.

James currently resides in New York which is homebase for his company, REAS International. The Stussy x Reas "Wayback Throwback" collection consists of apparel, accessories and Medicom toys featuring James's colorful graffiti style. The first delivery includes toys, tees, shirts, shorts, a ballcap and bags...
