C-90: Side B - Cassette themed artwork by MARK DREW

C-90: Side B
Cassette themed artwork by MARK DREW

Showing: 31 Aug – 5 Sept
Opening night: 2 Sept, 6-9pm
Gallery hours: Mon ~ Fri 11am ~ 6pm, Sat 11 ~ 3pm

'C-90: Side B' is an exhibition by Australian artist and curator Mark Drew featuring large scale hand painted illustrations of cassette tape spines. The first part of C-90 took place in Sydney late in 2008, and then toured to Melbourne, subsequently selling out. The show for 72 Erskine is a continuation of the body of work, and features all new artwork. The inspiration for the show comes from the much loved collections of cassettes that most people had as teenagers in the 1980s & 90s.

"In a time of MP3 data and binary information, the imagery C-90 deals with is quite emotive, recalling the graphic side of personal music collections".

Drew has exhibited frequently around Australia and has been behind the scenes of many local art shows, as co-owner of China Heights gallery. This will be his last local solo exhibition before taking up residency in Japan.

Art show "Future Colors of America" Albert Reyes, Matt Furie, & Aiyana Udesen at GRSF

Future Colors of America Albert Reyes, Matt Furie, and Aiyana Udesen
August 29, 2009 - September 16, 2009
Reception: Saturday, August 29, 6:30 pm-10:00 pm

Giant Robot is proud to present Future Colors of America, an art show featuring new works by three longtime friends, Albert Reyes, Matt Furie, and Aiyana Udesen.

Albert Reyes is a Los Angeles-based San Francisco Art Institute graduate who has developed a style equally influenced by graffiti, comics, and fine art. Among other media, he draws and prints on the inside covers of old books and mixes traditional Mexican imagery, popular culture icons, and political suggestion. He was the cover artist and main interview in Giant Robot 52.

Matt Furie
is an Ohio-born, San Francisco-based artist whose richly detailed and hyper colored illustrations and paintings reflect the creative cross breeding of The Neverending Story, unrestrained imagination of The Muppet Show, and humor of ALF. His corruption by popular culture is further complicated--or perhaps enriched--by the energy of BMX culture and anarchy of street art.

Aiyana Udesen was born in Hawaii, went to school at the San Francisco Art Institute with Reyes, and lives in San Francisco, where she gained attention for her "how-to-draw" series of zines, many of which have married her interests in celebrities, animals, and realistic-yet-stylish illustration. Her fine art in both colored pencil and paints share a minimal palate that doesn't distract from the linework yet channels the flair of the '80s without the excess.

A reception for all three artists (including a rare San Francisco appearance by Reyes) will be held from 6:30 - 10:00 on Saturday, August 29.

MQ x Upper Playground: MTN Artist Can

Somebody may not agree with me, but I think MQ represents the original essence of graffiti, bombing, destroying, getting up, being infamous from the East to the West. It's not politically correct for me to say that.... but who cares? I love this idea of graffiti and I pay the maximum respect for MQ! It's an honor to have a dedicated Limited Edition by this timeless Bomber.
-Angelo Lospinuso from Montana Colors

Upper Playground recently announced a collaborative project with Montana Colors to create artist series Hardcore cans by four artists. The second MTN x UP Limited Edition artist can in the series features the work of graffiti legend MQ.

For over a decade, the New York City-born artist has made his name in the graffiti world by being fearless and staying true to street culture. MQ’s distinctive lettering style has influenced a generation of bombers. His work can be found from the sides of ships in San Francisco to the brick walls of New York City.

The MTN x UP MQ Limited Edition artist can is available now in limited quantities and will be sold at Upper Playground retail stores and online on the Upper Playground web store.

Born, 1979 in Brooklyn, New York. Raised in Staten Island. Moved to New Jersey in 1996. Relocated to Los Angeles in 2005.

Known for versatile, adventurous letter-style, Rime (Jersey Joe) combines vivid colors, precise lines, and bold concepts to produce work that stands in a class of its own. Simply put, Rime’s work has character. A natural artist, Joe began painting graffiti during 1991 in Staten Island, and spent the next years developing his talent in different areas of New York City and New Jersey. By 2003, Joe traveled to Europe and earned international recognition under the handles “Rime” and “Jersey Joe.”

Joe relocated to Los Angeles in late 2005, and found work teaching graffiti art to inner-city kids at Los Angeles public schools. Within the next year, Joe joined MSK (a Los Angeles based graffiti crew) and a collective of artists known as The Seventh Letter. Joe also received a spray paint sponsorship from MTN Colors. To date, Joe has painted 20 cities within the United States and 22 cities in 13 countries internationally. Aside from being featured in numerous books, magazines, and videos, many of Joe’s works are still exhibited in original form for public viewing. Joe currently resides in Los Angeles where he actively paints, creates fine art and works on a variety of design-based projects.

Carhartt x Montana limited Can

For the second time now the cooperation between Carhartt and Montana brought out a can that is just essential for every sprayers collection!

Manufactured by Montana in Spain, the 400ml hardcore can is filled with the typical Carhartt orange color. The first limited edition originated from the collaboration with French artist KoolFunc’88, a member of the Ultra Boyz crew and contributor to the current Carhartt T-Shirt collection.

After the legendary brown color the orange one reflects another milestone in the Carhartt brand history. Limited to 1000 cans worldwide, they are available now in Carhartt flagship stores.

MOM & POPism, an exhibition curated by Billi Kid reinterpreting James and Karla Murray's latest book Installation Shots

New York City (July/Aug 2009): Gawker Artists presents MOM & POPism, an exhibition curated by Billi Kid reinterpreting James and Karla Murray's latest book, Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York, in unique collaboration with many of today's hottest graffiti and street artists.

Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York is a breathtaking visual guide to New York City's cultural heritage, with special emphasis on the historic streets and ethnic shops that have defined its many neighborhoods. Meticulously photographed, its powerful images of time-worn institutions will be printed at close to life-size scale and installed on the Gawker Media roof, becoming canvases on which select graffiti and street artists are invited to leave their indelible marks. The result will be a unique impression of a New York City that seems to be fading with each passing day. Our cultural and economic landscape will be called into question, the role of art, particularly graffiti and street art, will be subject to reinterpretation.

Curated by Gawker Artist Billi Kid, MOM & POPism brings together graffiti and street artists to create new artworks on top of the Murray's photographs. The collaborating graffiti and street artists represent some of the most notable artists in the street art community and the media at large. These include Blanco, Buildmore, Cake, Celso, Cern, Chris (RWK), Crome, Cycle, David Cooper, Destroy & Rebuild, Enamel Kingdom, Goldenstash, Infinity, Kngee, Lady Pink, Matt Siren, Morgan Thomas, Peru Ana Ana Peru, Plasma Slugs, Royce Bannon, Shai R. Dahan, Shiro, The Dude Company, Tikcy, Under Water Pirates, Veng (RWK), Zoltron and Billi Kid.

MOM & POPism closed on August 23rd. However, 3 walls from the show will be on view at Clic Gallery's Broome and Centre Street location in NYC through September 27th.

Arkitip presents Parra at Pool Gallery & Wood Wood, Berlin, Germany

Parra at Pool Gallery & Wood Wood, Berlin, Germany
We are proud to present Parra's first ever Exhibition and Pop Up Shop in Germany.

32-year-old Dutch illustrator and designer Parra has decorated the Amsterdam underground with his playful, bizarre graphics that span a broad base of themes, from introspective to audacious and bawdy. The mostly self-taught artist channels vintage forms, yet with a decidedly modern, post-pop approach and a distinctive, hand-drawn feel. His vibrant images and typography can be seen on prints in various exhibitions around the globe, on a flyer for a club near you, on the sleeve of a record, or on limited-edition tees and sweaters.

Parra's characteristic style has also extended into his music career with electro-rock group Le Le. Their most popular track "Breakfast" features Parra's typography and imagery set in motion to the song's pulsating beats and comical (and slightly naughty) lyrics.

MIKE SHINODA: GLORIOUS EXCESS (DIES) Exhibition at Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles

Linkin Park’s
Mike Shinoda
GLORIOUS EXCESS (DIES)

Opening Reception Saturday, August 29, 2009 from 8‑10pm
On View August 29 - October 14, 2009

Japanese American National Museum, Los Angeles, CA

Artist/Musician/Producer Mike Shinoda is pleased to announce his upcoming solo exhibition Glorious Excess (Dies) at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles. Following his highly-successful 2008 show, Glorious Excess (Born), Shinoda returns to the Museum to unveil his latest collection of paintings and digital works. Larger, broader, and more sensational than before, Glorious Excess (Dies) is the next chapter in his series exploring society’s obsession with celebrity culture, consumer addiction, and fascination with excess. Open to the public, the reception for Glorious Excess (Dies) will take place on Saturday, August 29 from 8 to 10pm with the artist in attendance, and the show will be on view until October 14, 2009.

Shinoda’s new works continue to evolve, blending his personal experiences in the spotlight with social commentary and fine art technique. Drawing from classical vanitas influences of the sixteenth and seventeenth century, Shinoda expands his signature visual vocabulary, juxtaposing symbols of death, money and sex against vibrant neo-pop imagery. The artist’s large-scale tableaus narrate the road to excess, culminating with a dramatic final destination into tabloid nirvana. In an age where superstardom dominates the media, Glorious Excess (Dies) immortalizes consumption, fame and wealth, challenging the viewer to question what is real.

On one hand, this show is about obsession with celebrity culture, consumer addiction, and fascination with excess. On the other, this is about me growing up painting, and finally feeling like I’ve found a stylistic voice that expresses the ideas I want to get across in a gallery show” says Shinoda.

A collectable, limited-edition book encompassing the Glorious Excess series will be launched on opening night, and accompanying the collection of 17 acrylic-on-canvas works will be a documentary short film on view during the course of the exhibition. Additionally, new skateboard decks and artist-series merchandise will be available for purchase at the Museum. All proceeds from the sale of artwork and merchandise will go toward the Michael K. Shinoda Endowed Scholarship at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.

Michael Kenji Shinoda is a Japanese American musician, record producer and artist from Agoura Hills, California. He is best known for his vocal and musical endeavors with two-time Grammy winning, multi-platinum rock band Linkin Park. Shinoda also oversees the packaging, print and online art for the band. He is also involved in other projects including Fort Minor, Music For Relief, and Projekt Revolution.

Shinoda was the youngest of his graduating class from Art Center College of Design in 1998, with a B.A. in Illustration. He has had a hand in most artistic facets of Linkin Park’s imagery, including album artwork, band merchandise, web design and on-stage production art. In his off time, he has worked with popular brands like DC Shoes and Kid Robot to design custom products for charity. Shinoda is also a featured member of The Seventh Letter’s Known Gallery. Mister Cartoon x Upper Playground T-Shirt, mtn artist can, In-store Signing & Walrus TV

Upper Playground understands the mind frame of an artist; they have good taste and they are very picky about who they choose to work with. They represent a true voice for artists and they are responsible for showcasing great street artists with all different styles. It felt good to finally do a collaboration with an artist-inspired clothing brand that showcases my favorite artists.
-Mister Cartoon

Upper Playground is proud to announce several collaborative projects, releasing this week, with Mister Cartoon. Inspired by the city of Los Angeles, New York graffiti, and low rider car culture, legendary West Coast artist Mister Cartoon has gained grand scale notoriety through tattooing several hip hop artists and celebrities. Mister Cartoon’s work has also appeared in a number of magazines, album designs, clothing lines and product collaborations.

Mister Cartoon created a signature can for Montana Colors and Upper Playground's limited edition artist cans. The first in a series of four, the Mister Cartoon MTN x UP can depicts a stylized vision of LA, complete with downtown storefronts and the Virgen de Guadalupe. Angelo Lospinuso from Montana Colors exclaims, What I can say about this man? He's a living legend, from LA to the rest of the world; actually I think he is one of the greatest ambassadors of the West Coast life style worldwide. Words are not enough to express the respect we have for Mister Cartoon!

In addition to the Montana collaboration, Mister Cartoon has designed his first t-shirt graphic for Upper Playground with an image that combines his classic iconography with impeccable lettering.

In conjunction with these releases, Mister Cartoon will be in San Francisco for an in-store signing. The signing will take place this Friday, August 28th, from 5 to 7 PM, at the San Francisco store located at 220 Fillmore Street. Finally, be sure to watch the Mr. Cartoon interview from “The Run Up,” available for the first time to the public for free, on Walrus TV.

Mister Cartoon was born and raised in Los Angeles. He began his career as a graffiti artist in the 1980s and quickly gained notoriety for his unique tattoos, custom low-rider car work, album cover designs, logos, exclusive advertisements, and collectable limited edition products. His richly detailed, hand-rendered designs adorn the bodies of countless celebrities, have been featured in exhibitions around the globe, and have been commissioned by a myriad of companies including Harley Davidson, Xbox, Casio and Imagine Entertainment. Mister Cartoon continues to build a diverse, devoted and loyal global fan base.

Sozyone Gonzalez "Kagemusha- the shadow warrior" at Vicious Gallery

Pablo 'Sozyone' Gonzalez should already be known to most of you. Since our very successful show last year, he went to places like New York and Berlin to show his skills in other galleries. Now he will be back with some brand new stuff. With "Kagemusha- the shadow warrior" he has been working once again very conceptual when it comes to a show. Definitely his skills don't seem to need any more practice- he already can be considered as one of the contemporary "masters"... Always in the centre of his works are the dark shadows of human society, gangsters, thiefs, thugs and warriors.

VICIOUS GALLERY /// Kleine Freiheit 46 /// 22767 Hamburg
Phone: +49 (0)40 67305653 /// E-Mail: info@viciousgallery.com
Opening hours: Wednesday to Saturday from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM

SOZYONE GONZALEZ [1973] Influenced by his hood's stories and legends, Pablo Gonzalez’s work evolves in a world of villains. In the winter of 1982, at the height of his eleventh year, Sozyone forges an old Belgian bank note. Two days of meticulous hard work that eventually helps his brother buy a pack of Luckies at the local deli. Thinking he’d quickly earn a rep’ as a forger, Pablo decides to study Art, which he achieves with the help of his brother.

He starts at St Luc in 1988 where he meets Smimooz Exel, they decide to launch a band called De Puta Madre. Expelled from St Luc, they’ll end up at Brussels school of Fine Arts from 1990 till 1996. Setting aside the joys of forgery, Pablo discovers the aesthetic vandalism of metropolitan graffiti and officially becomes Sozyone with his crew R.A.B. At a time when Hip Hop was authentic and ‘fresh’, they produce seven albums, several hundred graffitis and play at numerous jams and shows.

In 1996, Sozyone creates the Ultra Boys International with Gold Jaba, Prince Pro, Turs, Byz and Kool Recto. The crew develops a new form of Graffiti, a brutally refined mix of Marvel Comics, abstract futuristic mathematics, alphabetical constructivism and facial Picassonic cubism: Pure graffiti vanguard, that dismisses any other form of graffiti that are considered as futile. In 2004, Sozyone officially becomes Sozyone Gonzalez, showing his art that is sought-after by certain purists. He now does authenticity certificates for all of his paintings, sculptures, illustrations and engravings... Maybe a way for him to remember his favorite childhood occupation that required a pair of white latex gloves and a great deal of craftsmanship.

I Like The Tee Shirt But I Will Get The Painting
Works by Parra

Opening Reception: August 27th 2009 7pm-12pm
Exhibition: August 28th 2009 - October 10th 2009

Arkitip, Pool Gallery & Wood Wood present Parra’s first ever Exhibition and Pop Up Shop in Germany.

32-year-old Dutch illustrator and designer Parra has decorated the Amsterdam underground with his playful, bizarre graphics that span a broad range of themes, from introspective to audacious, facetious to bawdy. His work is instantly recognizable - a palette of bright, highly saturated primaries and pastels; vibrant hand-drawn text decorating, narrarating and commenting on a fantastical world of bird-headed men and women, sensual and voluptuous.

Growing up with his artist father, surrounded by Rubenesque pain- tings, he immersed himself in early nineties music and street culture, developing the unique style he‘s known for today. Mostly self-taught, Parra‘s unique blend of interests and personal history results in work that channels vintage forms, yet maintains a decidedly modern, post- pop character and a distinctive, hand-drawn feel.

His work can be seen on prints in various exhibitions around the globe, on a flyer for a club near you, on the sleeve of a record, or on limited-edition tees and sweaters.
