StolenSpace presents "Lovestain" A Solo Show By Miss Van

'Lovestain' A Solo Show By Miss Van
01.10.09 - 18.10.09

StolenSpace are proud to present 'Lovestain' a UK premier solo show from world renowned female street artist, Miss Van. A retrospective as well as a new body of work and taking over two exhibition spaces at StolenSpace, this will be her largest solo show to date.

Toulouse native and current Barcelona resident Miss Van started to paint her graffiti on the streets during the 90s, at the age of 18. Her overtly feminine street art was a breath of fresh air in a traditionally masculine movement of urban art and paved the way for many contemporaries. Now her infamous sultry female characters, known as her ‘Poupes’, are seen on the streets and in galleries alike all over the world.

From these pouting, sulky girls emerges a certain sensuality and disconcerting eroticism that is frank and unabashed. Their thoughts are palpable and the paintings become real in both flesh and spirit. Miss Van creates her characters with an innovative spirit. Affirming her style, the artist infuses into her work traits from her own personality, rendering them thus, self-portraits. It is through their fantasy that the sensitivity and fragility of the artist is expressed. She takes pleasure in playing with ambiguities, her dolls are childlike women that are equally angelic and devilish. They have a rare appeal that transcends gender-an appeal that also extends to the work that she shows in galleries.

Over the years, Miss Van’s characters keep evolving. They have become less cute and more dangerously alluring, edgier - their sexy aura made all the more complex by their increasingly ambiguous facial expressions. The more she has moved into gallery work and can work with the nuances of more fragile media than the streets allow (pencil, for one), her characters have grown even more sensitive, subtle, and delicately rendered.

Featuring a retrospective of her work & new paintings this show will also see the release of a rare exclusive hand pulled limited edition screen print from Miss Van.

FIFTY24SF Gallery Presents “Move (#19): A Collection of Works Curated by Rich Jacobs

FIFTY24SF is proud to host “Move (#19)” a group show curated by Rich Jacobs.

Rich Jacobs is an internationally acclaimed artist recognized particularly for his collaborative MOVE exhibitions. Jacobs’ work explores his own inspiration in both figurative and abstract realms. The MOVE exhibitions are a group based effort to bring together an upcoming generation of artists who evoke youth and vitality in different aesthetic mediums. “He said - he was enjoying the donuts for the most part, and laughing hysterically?" will be the nineteenth of this series. The MOVE project has created a cohesive movement of young artists dedicated to revitalizing street culture through skateboarding, illustration, graffiti, photography, and painting.

Featured artists in “Move (#19): He said- he was enjoying the donuts for the most part, and laughing hysterically?" include Jordin Isip, Eric White, Melinda Beck, Jason Polan, Kelly Nicholson, Billy Sprague, Carl Dunn, James Gallagher, Erika Borboa, Rob Leecock, Julie Goldstein, Brian Flynn, Rodger Bridges, Mofo, Rob Ben, Jocko Weyland, Garry S. Walrus TV Artist Feature: Mike Giant Interview from “Dithers”

Walrus TV Artist Feature: Mike Giant Interview from “Dithers”

I was at a skate spot that we had been painting, and I ate shit, real bad and it shook the ground. And this kid I was skating with said, ‘Damn, you went down like a giant!’ That was it; I started writing Giant from then on out.
-Mike Giant

Mike Giant’s art is found on skateboards, walls, t-shirts, and even skin. Although found in different forms and venues, his signature black & white style holds true to the sense of urban surrealism often linked to the skateboard, tattoo and graffiti culture, while still being recognizably unique. Mike Giant’s art has been displayed in galleries from San Francisco, where he resides, to Los Angeles, Spain and Australia. He has also launched his own clothing line, Rebel 8, which highlights his work on everything from tees to hats. Watch the interview from “Dithers,” available for the first time to the public for free, on Walrus TV.

KERAMIK Exhibition at Vicious Gallery

KERAMIK: Exhibition from 26.09.09-24.10.09

Keramik from Vienna is one of our most favourite artists. We fell in love with his always dark and strange humour.. He shows pictures from are surreal world that most of the times reminds us somehow Of our own environment and society. In a world full of lust, drugs, sex and death he is one of the big narrators of our time. Definitely he ain´t that type of guy who is going to decorate your living- room, which he would actually do, if you just let him. There fore he is one of the most truthfull artists in what you call `the urban art scene` that I have ever met. Last but not least there is no discussion to be held about his technical skills- he´s a genius..

MTN x UP El Mac / Retna Limited Edition Artist Can

El Mac/Retna x Upper Playground: Montana Colors Artist Can

I was always impressed by Retna’s eclectic technique, his lines, his calligraphy: his handstyle is awesome. I had the pleasure to personally met El Mac some weeks ago and I found not just a pure talented artist, also a really genuine person. Their work together is a perfect combination, well, even more, a symbiosis! Their styles fit together in such great harmony!
-Angelo Lospinuso from Montana Colors

Upper Playground recently announced a collaborative project with Montana Colors to create artist series Hardcore cans by four artists. The third MTN x UP Limited Edition artist can in the series features the collaborative work of El Mac and Retna.

Each of these artists has developed his own distinctive style and technique; Retna is renowned especially for his bold calligraphic brushwork, and Mac for his uniquely stylized painting of lifelike faces and figures; El Mac uses spraypaint and Retna uses spraypaint and acrylic for paintings; oil, acrylic, enamel, pencil, and other mediums on paper, canvas, and wood.

El Mac and Retna have combined forces a number of times in recent years, and have gained increasing attention and applause for the powerful and beautiful murals they’ve painted in Los Angeles and several other cities around the globe. Last month, they released Alianza, a 96-page hardcover book that highlights their collaborations, along with a selection of individual paintings and photos by each artist, as well as a collection of lifestyle photos, photos of the artists working and their travels, and close-up views of the murals themselves.

Beauty & The Beast COPE2 x CHOR BOOGIE at Mid-City Arts

COPE2 and CHOR BOOGIE are: Beauty & The Beast
Mid-City Arts, September 26th, 7pm - 11:30pm

COPE 2 is a Graffiti legend from the Bronx whose reputation for bombing has earned him the title “God of Destruction”. He was recently tapped to customize a vinyl toy for the Bic Buddy Artist Series 1, and was hired by TIME magazine to create a unique billboard for them (see below). CHOR BOOGIE hails from San Diego, CA and his work is purely legal, spiritual and therapeutic. A deep spiritual healing and recovery from addiction nearly a decade ago transformed his life and has had a major impact in his style of color therapy and techniques of creative innovation.

These two diverse artists come together for the "Beauty & The Beast" exhibit at Mid-City Arts, curated by POSE 2 to challenge and expand our notions of art.

Futura 2000 "Odyssey Two" Exhibition Berlin

Odyssey Two by Futura
Muenzstr. 19
Berlin

Exhibition opens on September 24th and runs until September 27th.
Futura Odyssey Two Exhibition Berlin

Odyssey Two is the upcoming exhibition by Futura and it runs throughout Art Forum Berlin and brings together 20 years of the urban art pioneer’s work. Significant new pieces will be on display, alongside key works such as the original iconic Pointman canvas and a collection of early Pointman sketches.

The show focuses on the dual themes of memory and the past, and the influence these have on an individual’s imagined world. Futura’s obsessions with space and hyperindustrial landscapes grew from his adolescence: a time when man first landed on the moon, and when the New York skyline soared with a mass of fresh skyscrapers. But the world in his pieces is entirely unique – a place that has developed in his mind over time, where remnants of earlier memories co-exist with imagined, abstract landscapes.Futura’s latest pieces show an artist comfortable in the world he has created, making accomplished works that use monochrome and occasional, frenetic bursts of outline to perfectly convey mood, atmosphere and situation, without the need for graphic symbols.

Collector’s will be able to buy an accessible selection of key pieces in the creation of Futura’s world: study pieces provide entry level works; there will be a trademark Pointman series and a limited print run. There will also be a small number of recent abstract canvases presented in the environment of their creation. The exhibition is produced in conjunction with Artorial.

Walrus TV Interview with David Choong Lee of Spare Paint and William

Walrus TV Artist Feature: Interview with David Choong Lee of Spare Paint and William

Sometime when you get bummed out out here and somebody does hand you that twenty-five cents, three pennies, five-dollar bill or whatever, it means a lot. Even the big, old, gruffy gangster-looking son of a guns, they actually care too.
-William

Spare Paint is a two-part series that features San Francisco artists David Choong Lee and Brian Barneclo as they engage two homeless men panhandling the rush hour traffic. They offer their talents to paint new, visually striking cardboard signs. In Part Two, we meet William, a home restoration specialist, as he shares his stories of what it's like to live on the streets and how he ended up there. Watch the interview on Walrus TV.

David Choong Lee was born in 1966 in Seoul, Korea. He moved to the USA in 1993 in pursuit of gaining the skills to be a traditional fine artist. He found that he was very interested in the art of young people after his graduation from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, in 1997. After seven years of focusing on the figure, he began to explore different concepts, such as mixed media, sculpture and graphic design. He ended up creating his own artistic style that is a combination of graffiti, collage, portrait, and classical realistic skill with bold graphic elements. As you can see by the release of his products, he has combined many different forces to create his own, distinctive style.

BARRY McGEE Mr Brown at Galleria Alessandra Bonomo in Roma

BARRY MCGEE
Mr Brown

17 September - October 17

Galleria Alessandra Bonomo, Rome, will inaugurate its show on Barry McGee, in collaboration with Deitch Projects. Fusing together found and invented imagery, tags and assorted objects Barry McGee draws on a range of influences including the Mexican muralists, tramp art, the graffiti artists of the 70’s and 80’s and the San Francisco Beat poets to create a unique visual language.

The work has the strong immediately recognizable visual signature of the best graffiti art, but is also enormously poetic and evocative. It communicates the artist’s strong empathy with people who have been left behind by contemporary society.
Also known by his street name, twist, Barry McGee has a large following in the street art community. He has been working on the streets of San Francisco, his native city, since the mid 1980’s where his images continue to endure on walls, mailboxes and other surfaces despite the continuous campaign of public authorities to paint them out.

McGee has long resisted showing his works in museums and commercial galleries but he has recently become more active ion the conventional art world context. His work was featured in the 55th Carnegie International in 2008, at the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in England in 2008, at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and at Brandeis University’s Rose Art Museum in Waltham, Massachusetts in 2004.

NEW YORK MINUTE 60 Artists on the New York Scene Exhibition

NEW YORK MINUTE: 60 ARTISTS ON THE NEW YORK SCENE

New York Minute, an exhibition organized by the DEPART Foundation in collaboration with MACRO, Museo D’Arte Contemporanea in Rome, will be on view at the MACRO FUTURE from September 19 until November 01, 2009.

This Exhibition, curated by Kathy Grayson, is the first show organized by the DEPART Foundation. It features a tightly-knit group of sixty artist on the New York scene, many living in downtown Manhattan but also including those practicing from Providence, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland, Virginia Beach, and even Tokyo. This extended community captures the drama, danger, speed and savvy of New York’s diverse scene. The exhibition will feature large-scale installations, site-specific murals, and collaborative activities that reflect the community spirit of the show. This is the first exhibition in Europe to highlight this group, whose works are infused with the lifestyle of its members. The exhibition look and feel will be created by downtown designer Rafael de Cardenas. A series of collateral events, organized in cooperation with NERO Magazine and related to the exhibition, including concerts, film screenings, and performances will activate the exhibition.

The expression “New York Minute” refers to the speed that New Yorkers react to stimuli, with a bit of impatience, a bit of ingenuity and a lot of smarts. The sixty artists in the exhibition show a rapid and resourceful response to current cultural events and issues specific to their generation. Their work explores some of the leading tendencies in new art making in New York such as: updating action painting and abstraction with the toughness of the streets, synthesizing low pop culture into handmade, heartfelt hybrids, taking conceptualism to new and absurd ends, organizing collectives and bands and taking interdisciplinary art on tour, and bringing downtown punk attitude to assemblage, collage and sculpture. These three new tendencies are represented in the show generally as ‘street punk’, ‘wild figuration’ and ‘new abstraction’.

Artists working with collage, assemblage, performance, sculpture or photography who exemplify the ‘street punk’ tendency include Dash Snow, Terence Koh, Nate Lowman, Aurel Schmidt, Agathe Snow, Hanna Liden and many others. They use the dark energy of the streets to make frank, confrontational, collage, performance, music and sculpture projects. They are attracted to the danger and lawlessness of the city and make gritty artwork that reflects this spirit.

Artists working in the mode of ‘wild figuration’ include Chris Johanson, AVAF, Paper Rad, Takeshi Murata, Francine Spiegel and many others. They favor prismatic pigment explosions along with handmade and found objects. Using graphic and comic references along with lowbrow pop imagery, they breed new beings and radiant animals. The communal nature of this group is reflected in their frequency to organize into bands and collectives.

A third group of artists are exploring New Abstraction. Whether updating New York School abstraction with the energy of the streets, like Dan Colen, Rosson Crow or Sterling Ruby, or revitalizing outmoded conceptual approaches to abstraction with current digital-era concerns like Tauba Auerbach, Xylor Jane or Ara Peterson, the new abstract painters are not cerebrally remote, but urgent and immediate.

Highlights of a New York Minute include “Downtown Don” Aaron Bondaroff’s pop up shop with all the zines, records, stickers, t-shirts and books produced by the artists in the exhibition. Tinyvices creator Tim Barber will be curating a large area of the show with contributions from his network of fresh photographers around the world. The opening will feature a performance by downtown punk band A.R.E. Weapons.

Weapon of Choice gallery present "Mash Media"

Weapon of Choice gallery present 'Mash Media'
Featuring artists: BYROGLYPHICS, JAMES BAKER & TRXTR

Opening preview 17th September 6-10pm
Free entry, drinks provided.
Running until the 11th October 2009

Since joining Red Propeller Gallery, who were instrumental in launching the careers of Ian Francis and Guy Denning, a phenomena with a simple formula – hunt down skilled, dedicated and unconventional artists who show a strong political, social or psychological content in their work – James Baker, Byroglyphics (aka Russ Mills) and TRXTR are all definitely heading in the same direction.

Already having shows in LA, Philadelphia and London under their belts, recent record breaking sell out print releases and major works coming up at prestigious urban and contemporary art auctions in London and New York this trio of artists at Weapons of Choice this month are on their way.

With a sell out show at Signal Gallery, London, in May and secondary market pieces already appearing at auction (substantially exceeding their guide prices) BYROGLYPHICS is riding high and has an enormous following. Describing his work as ‘Kitchen Sink Surrealism’ he has, for a long while, been quietly obsessed with Japanese pop culture, especially the Harajuku phenomenon.

‘I love the way that every piece of popular culture from the recent past is smashed together into a garish soup and regurgitated into real life with absolutely no boundaries’

His hybrid of traditional media and digital imaging, focusing on human idiosyncrasies both physical and emotional result in distorted forms both subtle and extreme.

TRXTR – successfully edging his way into the US market last year showing alongside Guy Denning, Charming Baker and Case in Los Angeles and with work accepted into the upcoming Bonham’s New York Contemporary Art Auction, is seriously on his way - Obsessed with sex and war, beauty and celebrity and the relentless destruction of the planet his beautiful mashed media psycho/schizo canvases defy interpretation.

Fresh talent, emerging from the hotbed of creativity, which is Loughborough University School of Art and Design, JAMES BAKER’S painting and prints are a celebration of the inevitable collusion and blending of cultures that now affects even the most distant of societies. These strange visual creations of a 'poly-colour' age are manifested in the 'anything goes' state of Yesyoucanistan, where borders are continually eroded, commercialisation rules and fringe beasts roam as champions of hybridity all resulting in a beautiful, chaotic fusion of screenprint, painting and drawing.

Jonone "Close Up" New Works at Speerstra Gallery

JONONE "CLOSE UP"
New Works
17.09.2009 - 17.10.2009

Paintings and drawings by American Graffiti artist Jonone

JonOne’s work has evolved since the early days of graffiti in New York. His style goes beyond the traditional codes of graffiti. Whether in his black and white series, colour series or “graph” series, JonOne’s style in motion is the missing link between the great masters such as Kadinsky and Matisse, the American abstract expressionists such as Pollock, De Kooning, Joan Mitchell and Robert Motherwell, and contemporary art.

His recent paintings include a combination of vibrant colors melted within simple shapes expressing his optimistic vision towards the irony of our world. In a parallel series, he unveils a dry humor egocentrism by writing his name indefinitely in reference to his graffiti roots.

JonOne’s style is one of the most personal of his generation, half way between abstract and street smart painting. He is bridging the gap between modern art and contemporary art. JonOne has already earned himself an international reputation.

Anonymous Gallery is pleased to support The
Black & White Show. Featured at Collective Hardware (169 Bowery at
Delancey), curated by AMP Tracks, Meghan Carleton and Amandine Lesaffre Freidheim and
sponsored by Daniel K, the exhibition, void of color, explores the graphic clarity and dynamics of
black-and-white imagery by artists emerging to blue-chip.

The Black and
White Show will be on view from September 16 to October 3, 2009. The
gallery will be open from noon to 7pm daily. An opening reception will
be held Wednesday, September 16th from 7-10pm.

The black-and-white palette explores the
power of contrast. The simplicity of black and white brings the
potential for dramatic and vivid expressions. As the two values compete
for the eyes attention, stark and evocative forms emerge, in a powerful
accentuation of imagery. This exhibition highlights the range of
possibilities using this basic yet bold representation.

Mike Swaney "Zulu Voodoo Buddha Guru" solo show at Iguapop Gallery

Mike Swaney
"Zulu Voodoo Buddha Guru"

Walrus TV - Interview with Brian Barneclo of "Spare Paint" and Joe

The word is “keep pressing on.” And you guys take that from an old soldier,
you keep pressing on, man.

-Joe

Spare Paint is a two-part series that features San Francisco artists David Choong Lee and Brian Barneclo as they engage two homeless men panhandling the rush hour traffic. They offer their talents to paint new, visually striking cardboard signs. In Part One, we meet Joe, a Vietnam Veteran denied retirement benefits, as he shares his story of what it's like to live on the streets and how he ended up there.

Brian Barneclo: Most people know me for my large-scale murals in restaurants, bars, hotels, homes and on the streets of San Francisco. Possibly the most notable work I've done is the massive "Food Chain" mural which spans 225 feet (25 feet tall) and was created in just two weeks. I credit my experience as a sign painter as a major technical influence. What I enjoy most is combining and blurring the lines between styles. My work can go from surreal/folk to pop/cubism to urban/modern, all the while maintaining an aesthetic that's all my own. It adds up to a lot of play, and that's how I approach my work. It's serious fun. Seriously.
