Steve Powers AKA Espo’s new print for POW

Steve Powers does an interesting thing. Somehow he manages to convey his screwball humour and Philly jive talk directly onto canvas completely undiluted. This print actually looks the way he talks. It's Powers gold, but be aware it's kind of large and may overpower walls of a delicate nature.

NEW YORK CITY Black Book Masters / ON THE RUN BOOK #6

ON THE RUN BOOK #6
NEW YORK CITY Black Book Masters

New York City Black Book Masters presents a visual feast of ca. 170 drawings, outlines and burners from the personal collections and black book archives of New York’s finest old school and new school graffiti writers, collected and complied by Alain “KET” Maridueña and From Here To Fame Publishing.

We are allowed a privileged glimpse into a usually closed off and private world—the world of a writer’s personal black book—with this wonderful collection of candid and playful pieces that date from 1976 through to 2009. Through the working ideas and drawings that are represented we can see not only the generational differences in styles and execution but also another side to our graffiti heroes, a more intimate and personal one.

From Here To Fame Publishing believe it is essential that all aspects of writing culture be preserved to ensure that the real history of graffiti culture is not lost and can be shared with the newer generations of writers and art enthusiasts alike. With that in mind they offer New York City Black Book Masters—a delightful treasure.

New York City Black Book Masters pays homage to the writer’s black book with a wonderful collection of candid and playful drawings from some of New York City’s finest old school and new school writers. The likes of, RIff 170, Noc 167, Case 2, Chain 3, Dondi, Erni, Daze, Iz the Wiz, Lady Pink, Zephyr, Ghost, Freedom, T-Kid 170, Cope 2, Nic One, Ewok, Zimad, Ket and many more.

"The black book has been around since the beginning of my career and still exists as a staple for any real writer. It’s a tool of the trade. It just started out as a tool to get your peers’ autographs but then as time progressed, it became a staple for preparation; somewhere you could document work, draw in at any time and get really, really explicit in." PART ONE

"Aside from the practice—which surely shows on the wall—owning a full black book packed with fresh graffiti drawings is like having a museum-quality art collection in a handy carrying case." YES 2

Conor Harrington "Headless Heroes" at Lazarides Rathbone

Conor Harrington 'Headless Heroes'
30th October 2009 - 26th November 2009

Lazarides is proud to present 'Headless Heroes' by Conor Harrington. Conor's last solo show in 2008 was a bold and beautiful visual feast and 'Headless Heroes' promises much more.

Continuing his exploration into masculinity and power, Conor's new paintings and drawings combine historical re-enactment, F1 pit-stops, text and glamour models. Conor's aim is to have the visual aesthetic of his paintings reflect the visual culture we live in.

Since he was a teenager painting on the streets of Cork, Conor has always tread a fine line between 'street art' and 'fine art', never aligning himself with a particular movement or aesthetic but instead pushing forward with his own unique representations of the world around him, creating works that are striking yet accessible.

The show is open Monday-Friday 11-7pm and Saturday 12-5pm.

A.L.I.C.E. GALLERY PRESENTS "A.R.C." An exhibition by the collective PICA PICA

A.L.I.C.E. GALLERY PRESENTS "A.R.C." (Adventures Research & Cycling)
An exhibition by the collective PICA PICA.
- Boris Magotteaux, Manuel Falcata and Jerome Degive -

29.10 > 23.12.09
Vernissage: Thursday 29.10.09 at 18.00

The name Pica Pica comes from the latin name ‘ the talkative magpie’, a beautiful common bird found in the wastelands around Liège. This well-chosen name sums up their artistic reasoning. Discover the beauty in the ugly. I.E. in a cheap decorative pattern, in the façade of a pre-build house, in a dumb, in an old-fashioned vase,… Their work glorifies these elements unwanted by the aesthetic canons.

The 3 artists from Pica Pica produce all the paintings, drawings, photographs and installations jointly. They have worked together since 1999, first within the ERS collective and as Pica Pica since 2007.

V1 Gallery proudly presents "UMMMM" an installation by Thomas Campbell

V1 GALLERY PRESENTS UMMMM
A solo exhibition by THOMAS CAMPBELL
Opening day: Friday October 30. 2009. From 17.00 - 22.00

Thomas Campbell’s artistic universe is filled with soft curves, subtle tones, quirky poetic quotations and strange characters. A friendly melancholy and a loving gratefulness are embedded in each work. But don’t let it fool you. Underneath the calm surface an undercurrent of opposition and rebellion roams. An uneasy ocean of text fragments, aggressive abstract patterns and strange mixed material compositions. His strokes could go either way – along or against the fur. Like a welcoming high five, that could potentially turn it to a well-deserved slap in the face.

In conjunction with his exhibition at V1 Gallery The GRAND movie theater will host the Scandinavian premier of “The Present” on Wednesday 28.10. After the premier Mattson 2 and Ray Barbee, two of the artists on Galaxia will play concerts at the jazz club La Fontaine.

After party with our nieghbours at Jolene from 22.00 - late We Got Beef vs. The Jutland Giant and The Californian Boys.

NECKFACE "Devil's Disciple" solo exhibition at O.H.W.O.W.

NECKFACE
Devil's Disciple
October 31, 2009

O.H.W.O.W. 3100 NW 7 Avenue / Miami / Florida / 33127

Neckface will turn Miami inside out for his premiere solo exhibition in the Magic City. This Halloween night, Neckface will deconstruct all 10,000 square feet of O.H.W.O.W. and build a world like no other. Featuring a large-scale haunted house installation, complete with Neckface's iconic imagery, the Devil’s Disciple exhibition is designed to frighten viewers as they enter the space.

The crux of the exhibition though will surely be Neckface's new work. A deviation from the norm, it is chock-full of his signature imagery interweaved with a personal dimension that is much more palpable in the paintings. After so many years of crafting a persona and building up walls around himself and his moniker, the reclusive Neckface has finally cracked open the door ever so slightly and let us into his world.

With the introduction of historical and pop culture references into the visual storytelling, the paintings have grown more complex and more intricate. This newer imagery is balanced by considered application of wit throughout the work in the signature Neckface hand style. In addition to the paintings, a series of metal mask sculptures will be on display. Reminiscent of African Woyo masks, Neckface reworks the sculptures with sharp edges and creates an object that is distinctly contemporary and unmistakably his.

There's no doubt that Devil’s Disciple will be a breakout exhibition for Neckface. The work created will surely be considered his finest to date and is anticipated to redefine him and endear him to a whole new legion of fans.

Craig “KR” Costello and Mini at Vicious Gallery

When Craig `KR` Costello did his first show out here in Hamburg at Vicious in 2007, it had been a milestone for our gallery. We introduced our new venue exhibiting an artist with a great reputation from the Big Apple and his amazing brand KRINK in the background. It opened our eyes and we realized what we are capable to accomplish on a professional level in the future. We accepted the challenge and we achieved most of those goals in the past two years.

Meanwhile Craig traveled the world, including Russia and Australia exhibiting his work. Vicious Gallery and `KR` both developed forward and became a bit older. The `industry` recognized this as well and its no wonder that MINI asked Craig to paint a brand new car, which will be presented in the erste liebe bar and at our gallery. `KR` will exhibit his fresh new artworks at the Vicious Gallery and Radar Cinema will screen the documentary about the MINI project next door on the opening night.

Walrus TV / Ryan McGiness Interview

Walrus TV Artist Feature: Ryan McGiness Interview from “The Run Up”

There is a constant dialogue between me and the surfaces.
-Ryan McGinness

Ryan McGinness is interested in creating a new vocabulary for everyday symbols and icons through context and composition. Using layering, repetition, and juxtaposition, his complex pieces construct “worlds within worlds.” With his massively intricate silk-screened paintings, sculptures, and installations, he’s able to blur the division between design, pop culture, and fine art. Ryan McGinness’s artwork has appeared in numerous books, magazines, and exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe. Watch the interview from “The Run Up,” available for the first time to the public for free, on Walrus TV.

Ryan McGinness was born in Virginia Beach, Virginia in 1972, and received a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University (1994). He has exhibited his work in numerous solo exhibitions including Never Odd or Even at Paolo Curti / Annamaria Gambuzzi & Co., Milan and Vous Etes Ici, Amsterdam (2006); Galeria Moriarty, Madrid (2006); and Installationview, Deitch Projects, New York (2005).

Steve Powers "A Love Letter For You" interview for Fecal Face

Adam: How do you feel about the Love Letter Project as you take the bus home?

Steve: I'm on Amtrak on the quiet car, trying to whisper and I got people complaining at me, "Your on the quiet car!" I say, "What" they repeat themselves louder, and I say, "Why are you yelling on the quiet car?" People just want a reason to be the police. Oh, the Love Letter? That's amazing. You notice how loud Philly sirens are? As loud as New York with NONE of the constant ambient noise NYC has. I'm trying to take a Philly ambulance on Amtrak quiet car, then you'll seeee. (The interview continues here)

Love Letter is a project by Stephen Powers with the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program and is sponsored by the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage through the Philadelphia Exhibitions Initiative. Generous support provided by the Brownstein Group and Septa.

Stephen J. Powers is a New York City artist who at one time wrote graffiti in Philadelphia and New York under the name ESPO ("Exterior Surface Painting Outreach"). He was most well known during the late 1990s for his conceptual pieces as well as his role as the editor and publisher of On the Go Magazine. He has shown at The Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, The 49th Venice Bienalle, The Luggage Store in San Francisco, and had his first museum solo show at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in 2007. In 2003, He founded the Dreamland Artist Club and partnered with Creative Time to commission over 45 artists to paint signs and rides in Coney Island. This past summer he returned to Coney Island with Creative Time and opened The Waterboard Thrill Ride. As a 2008 Fulbright Scholar, Powers painted a love story in the streets of Dublin and Belfast. He lives and works in Manhattan.
