Weapon of Choice invite you to the launch of "The Cheo Colouring Book"

The latest title from Tangent Books is being launched at the Weapon of Choice Gallery on St Michael's Hill on Thursday, December 3rd, 6.30pm-9.30pm.

The Cheo Colouring Book is the work of one of Bristol's leading street artists. Cheo was one of the original New York-inspired Barton Hill Youth Club artists who came out of the hip hop culture of the mid 80s. In 1989 he came second in the World Graffiti Championships with fellow Bristol writer Inkie. Also in 1989 Cheo was arrested in the massive Operation Anderson police raid.

The Cheo Colouring Book may seem like a colouring book for children (and it can be), but it contains 15 full-colour Cheo prints and a free sticker.

Come along and get your copy signed at Weapon of Choice on December 3.

Vuk Vidor " Superheroes" Solo Show at The Magda Danysz gallery

Vuk Vidor - Superheroes
Solo Show from nov 28th to dec 24th, 2009

The Magda Danysz gallery presents for the first time Vuk Vidor’s recent works, the second stage of his americain Quartet. A work focused on the modern world, current events and precisely the ultra power of the United States. We find in his works the American comics’ drawing style but here the super-heroes are mostly pathetic or discouraged.

Famous art critic Jean-Luc Chalumeau describes the work of this French-Serbian artist this way "we do not describe the painting of Vuk Vidor: too varied, too surprising, too mysterious in certain cases. But it is painting". Vuk Vidor is not only a painter, he also works on metal, steel, photography, he creates monumental installations and realizes collages. This multidisciplinary artist exposes in Belgrade, New York or Copenhagen.

This painting contrasts with the importance of the ideas. He uses every time a pop colored language in which every detail is an element of the story but the works of Vuk Vidor are deep and serious.

The religion is omnipresent and his American super-hero is soon transformed into a crucified Christ having for cross its own country or carried by the Statue of Liberty like a modern Pieta and covered by Stars ans Stripes flag by way of shroud. In this exhibition, Vuk Vidor express himself with large format painting, laser cut sculpture of these American heroes and you will discover a special installation in the project room about the ego of the artist. Vuk Vidor himself represented in a statue made of gold.

Vuk Vidor is like that, he combines the spiritual depth and the symbols of comics to demonstrate us - in a particularly colored style - that today "even the super-heroes can’t save us any more". Even before the recession, Vuk Vidor’s heroes had become unable to carry the American dream.

Sixpack France is pleased to announce the release of its first comic, signed by the experimented hand of Andy Rementer.

"Comfort Slaves" is the tragic and absurd story of our modern world. Through this funny and silent comics, Andy Rementer brings us face to the aberrations of our daily life: obsessions for objects, conformism, advertisement overexposures... The fanzine comes with two Sixpack x Andy Rementer tee shirts sold separately, available our online store. Interview here.

Andy Rementer grew up in southern New Jersey, USA, in a quiet town once free of Wal-Marts and strip-malls. In 2004 he received his bachelors degree in graphic design from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. EINE & ZEUS
CRIMES AND PUNISHMENTS
27 NOVEMBER 2009 — 24 DECEMBER 2009

Thursday, 26 November 2009
From 6.30pm – 8.30pm

For our next show at Ink_d Gallery we bring together two urban art heavyweights; Eine & Zeus. Both are prolific street artists and innovators in typography and both have pushed the boundaries in a way that has redefined how we see graffiti as an art form.

Eine is best known for his alphabets and letters on shutters and Zeus for his three dimensional images and sculptures based around his writing style. They come together at Ink_d for ‘Crimes and Punishments’ where their collaboration has produced a heavy hitting alphabet in Pen & Ink.

The show will feature beautifully framed original work on paper combining illustrations of crimes and punishments with Eine’s inimitable fonts and drawings of Eine’s hands by Zeus.
There will also be our usual affordable screen printed show poster and an exclusive low edition print release available during the show.

Ben Frost "Lost in the Supermarket" at Boutwell Draper Gallery

Ben Frost
Lost in the Supermarket

Opening Thursday 26 November 6-8 pm
Exhibition Dates 26 November - 19 December 2009

We are all Lost in the Supermarket and we don't even know it.

For the first time in three years, Ben Frost unleashes his visual delight that is mental torture, on Sydney. Recently returned from his second solo show in New York following exhibitions in London, Berlin, Amsterdam, Singapore, Beijing and San Francisco, Lost in the Supermarket embodies a solidification of the culturally confrontational and wildly irrepressible identity he has garnered over the last decade.

Now represented for the first time in Australia by a commercial gallery, Frost finds himself resting, even just for a moment, amongst a stable of distinctive and well established artists. This latest move signifying a leap of recognition in this country, from low-brow art rock star to vital sub-cultural art figure.

Ben Frost carries a lusty allegiance amongst his fans, with the enviable ability to tweak the vibe wire and entice the people, silent Pied Piper style, into his world of kaleidoscopic neo pop violence. His recent appearance on the Australian version of US reality series The Apprentice, saw him draw a larger crowd to see his work than any of the other exhibiting artists on the show. Well of course he did, he's Ben Frost.

In an ironic twist tied carefully between concept and reality, Frost has refined this ability to hypnotize his audience into a world of ferociously poignant assault. A background in performance art would explain this, with his existence within the visual art world becoming one all-encompassing, and frighteningly clever, performance piece that we find ourselves within.

Lost in the Supermarket, a reference to The Clash song, remarks on the over stimulation, confusion and daily hypnosis we are trapped by, as we struggle to stand still on a buzzing psychedelic landscape of brands, identities and social demands.

This is an exhibition of works that both comforts and confronts, as you slide through the hyper reality of Ben Frost's world and come out the other side dusting off the sensory debris of your over crowded daily life. Ben Frost has exhibited extensively throughout Europe, the United States and Australia.

His work is held in numerous Australian and international private and public collections.
He is the co-founder of the online art portal stupidkrap.com, and was a guest speaker at the 2008 Semi-Permanent and AG IDEAS conferences in Australia.
