André "Drawings" at Colette

André
"Drawings"

from February 1st to 27th.

On the street André is known by his graffiti-artist alter ego, the tag Mr. A and for his concept “Love Graffiti.” Mr A is a funny, round face, with a huge smile and a wink that follows you everywhere, and now is all over the world — and often in pink! — a color that is pretty much taboo in the graffiti world, except when it’s André’s monochromatic style. The Love graffiti are tags of people’s names commissioned by their loved ones that he does in pop colors near where they live, so that they can’t miss it.

Unlike the past 20 years of street graffiti, where a street artist imposes an anonymous tag for an anonymous crowd — some merely staining a depressing urban landscape, a few becoming famous gallery artists, such as Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, KAWS, Neckface, and of course Samo — André has hesitated to go from the street into the galleries. Rather he’s given a new sense to his graffiti art, first, by by-passing the walls of the gallery and introducing his imagery into clubs or night spots, which he participates in opening and promoting all over the world. In doing so he has proactively changed the nightlife of cities such as Paris, New York, and Tokyo. He also reinterprets the meaning of graffiti art, from underground opposition to a more friendly and utopian alternative to the day time. André is one of those rare people who is able to make things happen naturally. His genuine generosity extends into the romantic utopian nightspots he creates, and where people meet.

His second move, after having gone from the wall of the street to the walls of clubs, is choosing drawing over classic canvas work. In quiet moments, he prefers drawing on scraps of paper or in notebooks, which he’s constantly filling, but rarely shares with others. This is a more personal and intimate activity, far from the commercialism of art.

This is a selection of recent drawings that André made for Purple. They were influenced by the psychedelic love imagery of the 1960s and ’70s, along with his visual memories of the comic books he read as a kid. In André’s world, drawings have a special currency, like billets-doux to share love. For him, the only way to escape the smothering blanket of capitalism, in or out of the art world, is in things you can’t buy — love and generosity.

John CRASH Matos "Tin Machines" at ADDICT Galerie

John CRASH Matos
"Tin Machines"

January 30 th - March 4 th 2010

OPENNING SATURDAY 30 TH OF JANUARY 2010 18:00 À 21:00
EXHIBITION FROM JANUARY 30TH TO MARCH 4TH 2010
THUSDAY-SATURDAY 11:00 - 19:00

From Bronx to museum

John CRASH Matos is one of the pioneers of Street Art. Born in the Bronx in 1961, he started developing his style on the trains of New York at the age of 13. As all graffiti artists, he needed to spread his blaze: Crash as far as possible. This "underground" art has aquired recognition in the art world when Crash abandoned walls and trains to exhibit at Sidney Janis Gallery and at Real Art Ways, next to Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. The Post graffiti was born: graffiti had travelled from trains to galleries.

In 1978, Crash began working on canvas. He found in the workshop the time he didn’t have in the street. He could now express himself freely. His more personal paintings remind at this point abstract expressionism. However, as in his earlier works, the same feeling of violence emerges. This fast, powerful and lively-coloured painting is influenced by pop artists such as Lichtenstein, Rosenquist, Richter, Wesselman and Jones. In 1980, Crash si gned his last graffiti in the street and organized at the Fashion Moda "Graffiti Art Success", the first significant exhibition where, for the first time, Street Art is taken seriously by both the public and critics. The use of spray won general acclaim. Crash became the major and prolific pioneer of Post-graffiti. To him, indeed, an artist must paint every day, without interruption.

Crash managed to impose the authenticity of his style, stemming from the hip-hop culture, to the world of art, even in the most important museums such as MOMA in New York or the Museum of Groningen in the Netherlands. He was one of the first to add the 3D representation to lettering: fragments of face, eyes mingling with the letters of his name. His style is at the origin of a whole graphic expression that continues to inspire young graffiti artists, without being equaled. Perhaps this influence is due to the faithfulness of this precursor to his early inspirations?

Back to the origins

Crash has become an icon, but he does not forget his beginnings near the subway trains. For his new exhibition, he takes up with his origins and returns to the spirit of the street to rediscover the emotions he experienced when he was hiding to paint in the warehouses. Always in aerosol spray, he paints directly on pieces of metal and works his canvases as he would with a train, using pictorial effects evoking metal nails and separations of cars. He restores those moments that can only be understood by the people who pace up and down dark tunnels, armed with spray.

Finding the initial feelings of contact with the mater is a way for the mature artist to pay tribute to graffiti and to this profuse root of an art he has created. For the first time a King (the one that his crew recognizes as the most talented) comes back with nostalgia on the atmosphere of his early period. This exhibition expresses the artist's need of showing his faithfulness to the inspiring revolt that allowed him to introduce the art of graffiti. History looks regularly back into its foundation and this is why ADDICT Galerie considered exploring the source of this movement essential in order to recapture its essence.

Graffiti is an ephemeral art. Crash’s first urban paintings have now disappeared but the artist has protected their memory by photographing them. ADDICT Galerie displays these photographs (now considered as works of art) next to canvases. They are the witnesses of bygone days, of an art movement destroyed by the zealous MTA, and its repressive cleaning firm in New York. These photographs show the last traces of a rebelled graffiti, of this spontaneous expression of artists in the Bronx that travelled by subway to the heart of Manhattan. These pictures also show how Crash keeps improving his lettering and contributes to the progression of graffiti by allowing it to establish a link between "the street life and conventional society".

ADDICT Galerie, with this exhibition from January 30th to March 4th 2010, replies to all Street-Art detractors who are still wondering how legitimate “imprisoning" the graffiti in a confined space can be. It proclaims that this movement is definitely the most revolutionary of the late twentieth century. Moreover, John CRASH Matos, who was rapidly reco gnized by traditional circles, never had to question himself about these now obsolete thoughts. Supporting the emerging movements and Street Art since its beginning, ADDICT Galerie takes over from New York galleries of the eighties, such as the Fun Gallery, Razor Galley and Sidney Janis, which allowed graffiti to be recognized.

About Alex Pardee:
Alex Pardee’s unique style is one conceived through watching years of horror movies, writing graffiti and listening to gangster rap. His work best represents that of a circus sideshow cemetery. Final pieces are often brought to life by translating random shapes and colors into signs of torment and absurdity. By juxtaposing these two conflicting moods, Alex makes his works more personal to his viewers, forcing them to project their own feelings and emotions onto each character in his twisted universe.

NEW FROM HURLEY ART // RISK & SURGE

RISK (Kelly Graval)

Legendary L.A. graffiti pioneer RISK has been responsible for his fair share of firsts. He helped introduce New York style graffiti writing to the streets of L.A. in the 1980s. He was one of the first L.A. writers to paint freight trains, one of the first freeway bombers in the city, and one of the first writers to put his graffiti to canvas.

SURGE (Sergio Hernandez)

San Diego fine artist Sergio Hernandez, aka SURGE, reflects border town strife in his work.

Sid Lee Collective presents "Tender 'N Tasty" by Joe Holbrook

On the 29th of January Sid Lee Collective Amsterdam presents a finger-licking opening of the exhibition by fine artist Joe Holbrook.

What happens at night when everybody is left wandering home? After the clubs have blasted their last basses, after the fried chicken take away's are attacked by hungry hipsters? The city is left with the residue of nightly escapades. .

I've been noticing every time you get in a bus or tube in London nowadays somebody is eating out of a chicken box. And nobody really sees it, if you know what I mean?

In the new exhibition Tender 'N Tasty fine artist Joe Holbrook searches for these residues. He finds vultures roaming the streets, deers wondering around town and heaps of empty and half full chicken boxes. In his realistic painting style Joe knows how to capture the energy and dynamics of his spirit of time. For the exhibition Joe created eight new bodies of work, plus 4 framed drawings that have all been created in his London studio. Joe doesn't only observe and document the world that he sees, he lives that world.

Captured DVD // UNDFTD

Since 1979 Clayton Patterson has dedicated his life to documenting the final era of raw creativity and lawlessness in New York City's Lower East Side, a neighborhood famed for art, music and revolutionary minds. Traversing the outside edge he's recorded a dark and colorful society, from drag to hardcore, heroin, homelessness, political chaos and ultimately gentrification. His odyssey from voyeur to provocateur reveals that it can take losing everything you love to find your own significance.

The High Roller Society presents New Year New Danger

It has become apparent in this unstable economy that the omnipresent desire for personal happiness is really the ultimate goal. With jobs on the line and few places to turn within the establishment to achieve such satisfaction, we are increasingly looking inward for the answers. Creativity, in its many forms, seems to be the best method of survival as we ask ourselves, "What are we going to do now?".

Now, in 2010, with our cards laid on the table and a refusal to be a victim of circumstances, High Roller Society is born. As an artist-led, integrity-fuelled space, we are a true product of our environment, nestled in London's East End, but with sights set far and wide.

Our gallery launch exhibition, NEW YEAR NEW DANGER, is about taking risks. Trusting your instincts, walking your talk, and believing that anything is possible — regardless of the surrounding climate. We are proud to present fourteen hand-selected artists who encompass these very ideals which High Roller Society was founded on. 2 SICK BASTARDS, AIDA, BASE 23, DAVE THE CHIMP, HEAD HOODS, GOUCH, JAMES UNSWORTH, JULIE BENNETT, MARCIN DUDEK, LUDVIG, NEEQUAYE DREPH, ORBIE, ROBIN MASON, and SEMOR & CO will unveil a variety of works in an array of mediums that reflect this pro-active time. From lithography to installation, these artists have created a new environment that exists between the boundaries of the traditional and the untested, a place that weaves external pressures, conflicting views, and negative outlooks into a world worth living.

There is much to expect from the unexpected. This gallery launch exhibition celebrates an exciting new venture that will positively impact any who have ever dared to challenge the face of adversity, trust in themselves, and roll high against all the odds.

Montana Shop & Gallery Sevilla Presenta: Okuda- Falsa Realidad

Jef Aerosol "All Shook Up" at Ad Hoc Art

JEF AEROSOL “ALL SHOOK UP”
NYC DEBUT AT AD HOC GALLERY JANUARY 29TH.

All Shook Up: Jef Aerosol
January 29 - February 21, 2010
Opening Reception - Friday, January 29, 2010, 6-10pm

Ad Hoc Art presents international stencil master Jef Aerosol in New York City for “All Shook Up”, a stunning show of cultural icons by a Street Artist with 30 years in the game.

The show with Ad Hoc Art, a gallery widely regarded as one of Street Art’s polestars, features brand new stenciled works as well as the now-classic pieces that have made Jef Aerosol’s name itself iconic; on paper, wood, and found objects.

A true originator who helped spark what is now known as “Street Art” when he sprayed his first stencil series across the city of Tours, France one night in 1982, the self-taught Aerosol has continuously rocked the streets with his oversized portraits and helped define a new public art nomenclature with other French artists like Blek Le Rat, Miss Tic, and Speedy Graphito.

Steadily from the ’80s to the ’10s Aerosol has cut and sprayed stunning portraits of his heroes; cultural icons who stand undiminished by the hype. They connect directly with the masses and shake public opinion with humor and provocation; Strummer, Cash, Vicious, Hendrix, Bowie, Bardot, Cobain, Lennon, Smith, Jagger – all brainy agitators and vixens cut and sprayed in stark layers of black, grey and white. And each with Aerosol’s signature hot red arrows affixed nearby for exclamation.

In Street Art and in the gallery, Aerosol has not purely focused on those well-known personages. Among the faces you’ll find a number of self-portraits and portrayals of the more anonymous among us such as those living and working in the streets.

Like the best photographers, Aerosol catches the instant of truth in his portraits, and reveals a universal humanity in each subject. “In my work I love to call up my feelings and emotions to honor these modern day heroes who have fed my life with their music, art and ideas. This new show is a powerful and vivid collection of these inspirations that I am really excited to bring to New York for the first time," Jef Aerosol.

Three decades of getting up on walls in cities including Paris, London, Lisbon, Chicago, New York, Bejing, Venice, Amsterdam, Rome, Zurich, Berlin, Dublin, and Tokyo have given him all the “street cred” Jef Aerosol will ever need.

OS GEMEOS "Nos braços de um anjo" at Galleria Patricia Armocida

After the enormous success in 2007, Galleria Patricia Armocida is proud to announce the return of OS GEMEOS for their second solo exhibition at the Milan gallery, which opens on Monday January 25, 2010 at 6:30PM.

Otavio and Gustavo Pandolfo (1974, São Paulo, Brazil), identical twins better known as Os Gemeos, were pioneers of Brazilian writing in the mid 80s. Aside from the incredible works they’ve created in the streets of São Paulo, in recent years they’ve also been invited to show their creations in museums and in some of the most important art expos worldwide.
For this exhibit, entitled Nos braços de um anjo (In the arms of an angel), they will present never-before-seen works: large canvases, musical sculpture-objects, mechanical and interactive site-specific installations which will be created in the gallery itself.

The exhibit includes works that reflect their imagination which is influenced by daily experiences in the urban outskirts of a huge metropolis rich in contrast, and by cultural and musical folklore of the northeastern part of the country, which have been translated by the sensitive eyes of the artists into poetic visions with surreal and dreamlike atmospheres.
Os Gemeos’ distinctive characters, recognizable by their yellow skin and garish clothing embellished with gems and sequins, create delicate portraits of musicians, fishermen, women, and children who populate simple and sensual scenes of Brazilian reality that are melded with imaginary figures conceived in their oneiric universe. The precision of their lines, the delightful details in background landscapes or in the texture of the clothing, generate a sense of amazement and lead us to magical and fairytale-esque places imbued with a subtle and at times melancholic sense of lyricism which touches the soul.

Hailing from the street culture of São Paulo, Os Gemeos’ works gained international recognition and have been exhibited in prestigious cultural events, such as the Bienal de São Paulo in 2001, Cuba’s Havana Biennial in 2006, and in museums worldwide.

Piecebook Reloaded: Rare Graffiti Drawings, 1985-2005 discussion and slideshow at Greenlight Bookstore

Piecebook Reloaded: Rare Graffiti Drawings, 1985-2005

Tuesday, January 26, 7:30 PM

Slide show and conversation with authors Sacha Jenkins and David Villorente and contributing artists TBA

Piecebook Reloaded is a tribute to the work of New York City’s graffiti community in its most private form—the sketches and drawings that fill hundreds of piecebooks that make their way through some of the greatest artists in the community. Unlike the more controversial forms of graffiti, which are also acts of vandalism, the art of the piecebook breaks no laws and puts no one in harm's way.

Sacha and David, longtime Brooklynites who are deeply connected to local street art culture, will host a talk with some of the artists, which will include a sideshow presentation of many of the pieces and the chance to get books signed by graffiti impresarios.

About El Mac:
Since having started painting graffiti as "The Mac" in the mid 90s, he has been commissioned to produce murals around the world, he has exhibited in museums, and his work has graced the cover of numerous publications. Mac has gained increasing notoriety for his almost photorealistic depictions of both ordinary people and ethereal women, in a style that is uniquely his own. Mac's intricate brushwork styles have also gained attention, while some of his murals have become mini-landmarks. Elements, themes and techniques of classic art are often incorporated into a modern context in Mac's artwork, usually with an emphasis on the human face and figure.

About Retna
When Los Angeles-based graffiti artist Retna's work first appeared in the mid-nineties, what made it stand apart from the rest was its unique layering. His color palette was so intricate and so carefully chosen that his pieces often looked to have been daubed on with a paintbrush. Quite the achievement when you consider he was painting on walls, trains, bridges and freeway overpasses in the black of night. Frequently inspired by images of females found in magazines and corporate advertisements, Retna is especially known for embellishing existing fashion advertisements by overlaying a classic style that recalls Mayan and Egyptian hieroglyphs and even Byzantine religious mosaics.
