中村 晃大 - Codai Nakamura Solo Show at West Berlin Gallery

中村 晃大 - Codai Nakamura Solo Show

Codai Nakamura grew up, studied and leaves in Japan.
West Berlin Gallery presents his first solo show in Europe from June 3rd to July 3rd.

Codai Nakamura's first key inspiration comes from Taro Okamoto. The Japanese mentor, noted for his abstract and avant-garde paintings and sculpture, changed is vision for Art. Okamato's vision being very different from the approach of the traditional Japanese Fine Art Schools. Okamato showed him that Art doesn't necessarily needs to be beautiful in the conventional way, opening new doors to his creativity. Codai Nakamura's paintings & illustration are very iconic, with central characters who represents Japanese people in their daily life. His work draws heavily from a pessimistic view of the urban experience which he describes in his work as tired characters and sad persons. Later on he was also influenced by Barry McGee and got to paint a lot of street characters.

Nakamura, despite his young age, has already had numerous shows in galleries in Japan such as galerie 6C or the Sunsui Museum. West Berlin Gallery will present a collection of his latest works, exhibited for the very first time in Europe. During the vernissage on Thursday June 3rd he will do live paintings for the pleasure on the audience.

The Opening Ceremony will be held on Thursday the 3rd of June at 19:00 in West Berlin Gallery, Brunnenstr. 56 Berlin. The evening will be completed with a live painting session by the artist, music by Massimiliano Pagliara (Balihu / Rushhour / Robert Jonhson) and nice drinks to make it a date!

RSVP over Facebook as usual.

Vladimir Kato "Wilderness" at Show & Tell Gallery

Vladimir Kato
Wilderness
June 4th - June 27th 2010

Show & Tell Gallery is proud to welcome Vladimir Kato to his second solo show with the gallery in as many years.

This exhibition is Vlad's take on the exploitations of wildlife. By using a range of unnatural and over exaggerated colors, Vlad aims to capture the chaotic personalities in the subjects he paints. Wilderness is a truly unique and amplified look at the idea of zoology.

Vladimir Kato is a graduate of the Interpretive Illustration and Classical Animation Programs at the Sheridan College of Art and Design. Since graduating he has done illustration for several recognized magazines and clothing companies, worked with award winning animation studios, and exhibited his fine art across the world.

Vladimir currently lives and works in Toronto.

Alëna Skarina "Kind Red" at Show & Tell Gallery

Alëna Skarina
Kind Red
June 4th - June 27th 2010

Show & Tell Gallery is pleased to welcome Siberian born artist Alëna Skarina to her first solo exhibition with the gallery. Alëna's art reflects her deep affinity with animals and their poignant nature. Line refinement, organic hand done typography, and tasty (sometimes perverse) subject matter are some of Alëna's most common pursuits when it comes to illustration.

Alëna’s fine art illustrations have been recognized by American Illustration, 3X3 Magazine, Applied Arts, and Creative Quarterly. Her commercial clients include Milk, Nissan, and Chatelaine Magazine.

Kind Red is a body of work about kindred connections manifested by kindness. The animals and creatures in this body of work interact in symbiotic ways, denoting the beauty of reciprocation. The typographic elements that appear throughout the Kind Red series also reinforce Alëna's personal stance: that kindness is the most powerful taming agent, akin to the power of blood ties.

Dave Decat "Fritz Honka" at Vicious Gallery

DAVE DECAT
Fritz Honka

Vernissage Sat. May 29th 2010
8pm Till late.

Exhibition: May 29th until June 19th

Our man Dave has returned to Hamburg! Through his former visits to this beautiful city he had gained a feeling for the vibe that´s going on here. There are not only the fancy houses around the Alster or Elbe. There is also this magic place called St. Pauli. Right in the middle of St. Pauli, where our gallery is located, you just have to look out of the window to see all the similarities between Dave´s work and the looks and attitudes of the people living in St. Pauli. Thugs and pimps, hookers and drinkers, gamblers and thiefs. What else would have been more logical for him to return for his second solo- show, than bringing loads of portraits of those people representing our dirty and shady, but also lovely and beautiful St. Pauli!?!

The belgian artist Dave Decat was born and raised in brussels, where he attended the Royal Academy of Art to become an illustrator. From the mid 80´s until the 90´s he was very involved in the New York Hardcore Scene and did a couple of european tours as tour manager for the infamous parisian band Kickback.

He had also worked in a tattoo shop in Brussels where he replaced the boss when this one was sick, tattoed a 100's of people but stopped when he had the opportunity to draw two campains for Carhartt worlwide and has worked for Rugged Magazine, Sixpack shirts (9 shirts). He did record covers for Hi-Phen records, The Sedan Vault, Joe Coffee ... In the last years is career as an artist has realy increased in speed and he has exposed in Antwerp, Brussels, Hamburg, Rome, Koln .... Since his first show at Vicious Gallery in 2009 which was a huge success, the Vicious Gallery sees him as one as the most important artists for the gallery´s profile. His infamous characters represent the lifestyle of St. Pauli. He will proof this at his next solo- show.

There have been countless exhibitions of the art inspired by skateboard culture. Decks and shoes adorned with the paint splatter from our favorite skaters from yesteryear. Showing that not only does skateboarding breed creativity, but with it astounding prowess. In recent years professional skaters such as Ed Templeton, Jason Lee, Mark Gonzales, Chris Pastras and Jason Adams have carved their own ways into the world of art with favorable reviews. - co-curator Isaac McKay-Randozzi.

During the tour they will be camping out, skating local spots and cavorting with each community on the most grass roots level.

Eric Anthony, Todd Bratrud, Mark Fos Foster, Greg Pnut Galinsky, Ben Horton, Matt Irving, Andy Jenkins, Michael Leon, Geoff Mcfetridge, Travis Millard, Donny Miller, Mat O’Brien, Dennis McNett, Andrew Pommier, Michael Sieben

These are the artists behind the brands, making the graphics for companies that have inspired us for many years. The premise of this group show serves to reconnect these artists with what got them where they are at in the first place: their skateboards. With support from Vans shoes, on May 28th they trade in their comfortable studios and desks for a snug ride in a van (generously provided by Volcom clothing) with over 100 pieces of art, a dozen skateboards and camping gear to embark on a classic skate-trip across part of America. Bringing one-night-only art shows to L.A., Kansas City, and Austin.

The unique thing about this group is that they are widely known for their art and work for skateboard companies and little known [due mostly to their own authority] for their action on their skateboards.

Saturday, May 29th, "One Way or Another", a one night exhibtion at the HVW8 Art + Design Gallery. 661 N. Spaulding Ave., West Hollywood, Ca. 90036

NAME TAGGING New MBP book by Martha Cooper

Graffiti Photography Legend Martha Cooper
presents NAME TAGGING

Mark Batty Publisher is proud to announce its second collaboration with famed graffiti photographer, Martha Cooper. In her first book with MBP, Going Postal, Cooper documented postal stickers adorned with some of the best-known street artists' work. With Name Tagging, she presents a dizzying array of "Hello My Name Is" stickers adorned with tags, the origin of graffiti and today's street art cultures.

Name Tagging recognizes the variety and innovation of tags, crediting the form's history while demonstrating how old-school methods breed some of today's most exciting graffiti. Cooper's introduction, artist interviews and colorful photographs make clear how artists famed and anonymous take advantage of the accessibility and practicality of name tag stickers. Name Tagging captures the artistry and audacity of these artists and their distinctive tags.

Interviews with ZEPHYR, COST, EDEC, CLAW, TWIST, SURE & FAUST, COSBE, ALONE, CAHBASM, OVERCONSUME and EARWORM reveal the history of this tradition as well as shed light on how some of today's most prolific writers get up.

“Finding an unusual sticker is definitely more challenging than photographing it, but photography is an excellent way of preserving this very ephemeral art form,” says Cooper. “Tags written with markers on name badges enable the intricacies and aesthetics of their styles to be studied and appreciated – that’s what this book is about.”

Martha Cooper is a New York-based photojournalist specializing in art and anthropology. She is among the handful of photographers who methodically documented subway graffiti during the 1970s and 1980s. Her body of work is the most extensive and significant of its kind.

She is also the author of MBP's Going Postal.

SEEN Solo Show at Galerie Magda Danysz in Paris

Seen Solo Show

Opening 29 May, 2010 from 6pm to 9pm
show on going from 29 May, 2010 to 26 June, 2010

As a pioneer of the "Street Art" movement, an emblematic figure of the graffiti movement, SEEN becomes famous in the 70s on the New York artistic scene ; he actively participates in the emergence of the movement. From a very young age, he is already seen as a prodigy. At the age of 11, he tags his first trains. Later, he decides to revisit letters and hit the "Hollywood" sign in Los Angeles. In 1981, he takes part in the exhibition "New York/New Wave" at PS1 with Keith Haring and Andy Warhol among others. Considered as an icon of the graffiti movement, SEEN marks a whole generation by the strength of his creations and what he brought to this scene in terms of style. Still today, SEEN surprises by the virtuosity of his style and his creativity.

His art is between the inheritance of the street which he claims in each of his works and a very graphic technical virtuosity. Apart from its works full of coloured lettering, in which he's become a real master, SEEN developed over the years a series of works on canvas, creative and personal. In this show, SEEN presents the three series of very meaningful works. For one, he inserts steel and theMetro Transit Authority logo as to remind us his golden relationship with the streets of NY as he puts it himself, "Graffiti is my life, always has been and will always be".

On another level of the show one can discover the influence of the tattoo culture in Seen's life. Eventually, on the third level of the gallery SEEN offers a research work where he investigates abstraction. Beyond graffiti, beyond this school which continues to feed his work, SEEN proses above all a complete artist. Today, he is considered as one of the most talented artists of his generation by numerous fans.

96 pages catalogue available at the gallery.

STROKE.02 The world’s first Urban Art and New Contemporary Art Expo

STROKE.02
The world’s first Urban Art and New Contemporary Art Expo
27 – 30 May 2010
Munich

STROKE.02 the art fair

The 7000 visitors that attended STROKE.01 in October 2009 transformed Munich into the capital city of „Urban“ or „Contemporary Art“. Inspired by this success the STROKE organizers have come up with a few things to make sure that STROKE.02 is even more creative and varied.

The top Urban Art galleries will have 10.000 m² within which to present their artists and to create a diverse and varied „Urban Art“ ensemble. Among the exhibitors are major galleries such as Intoxicated Demons from Berlin, New York’s Honeycumb, Laura McNamara from Birmingham, Milan’s United No Art Collection and xhoch4 from Munich.

Additionally, well-known artists like Claudio Ethos, the MA`Claim Crew, Pisa 73 and Box 23 will be painting live – bringing their work closer to the public and offering visitors an insight to the creative process, how they develop their pieces and how they interpret the term „Art“.

STROKE.02 is upping the ante even further, offering a special highlight: art developed using LEGO building blocks will be presented on a 300 m² area under the motto „LEGO goes Graffiti”. This exhibits the versatility of the children’s toy and further reflects the creativity of the scene. The LEGO Live Charity Battle will be running over the entire duration of the show, with up to four artists letting their imaginations run riot and building larger than life LEGO artworks. These will be auctioned during the show, with proceeds going to charity.

DJ Acts will round off this extensive programme each evening, offering visitors a complete programme with something for everyone.

Raiko Schwalbe is thrilled with the response and the build-up so far: „Our exhibition space is already booked out and we’ve had a lot of feedback from Stroke01 visitors telling us how much they’re looking forward to Stroke02“. He has lived in Munich for 10 years and together with his brother Marco runs the „Intoxicated Demons“ gallery in Berlin.

While his graphic designer brother is responsible for the creative department, as a former Key Account Manager Raiko Schwalbe mainly looks after the business side of things. Munich’s „Team From Hell“ also benefits from this symbiosis, with Florian Pop, Hubertus Becker and Quirin Schwanck having already worked together with the Schwalbe brothers, to stage the STROKE.01 Urban Art-Expo in a former BMW dealership.
