12ozProphet Presents... Found Footage: 1997 Brazil Graffiti with Os Gemeos, Raven & Sonik

Raven and Sonik went to São Paulo, Brazil in December of 1997 to put together a story on Brazilian graffiti for 12ozProphet's sixth issue. Twist had connected us with Os Gemeos, and we went there to introduce them to the world via our magazine. The sight of São Paulo and the otherworldly graffiti scene exploding over its gut-wrenching social landscape, the peculiarly Brazilian collision of poverty and wealth, was a complete shock. Meeting Os Gemeos - as well as Nina, Vitche, and Herbert Baglione, gave us friends for life, and the sight of their work was a glimpse into the future of an art movement we thought we knew, but even now, more than a dozen years later, has yet to catch up. Here's a short video edited from footage thought to have been lost for well over a decade.

Niels Shoe Meulman “Calligraffiti: Letters of Independence” solo exhibition at Salamatina Gallery

Niels Shoe Meulman
“Calligraffiti: Letters of Independence”

Thursday, July 1 – Tuesday July 27, 2010
Opening reception for the artist: Thursday, July 1, from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m.

The Salamatina Gallery is pleased to host an unprecedented installation, Calligraffiti: Letters of Independence, by the cutting-edge artist Niels Shoe Meulman. This unique project will open on the evening of Thursday, July 1st with a live Calligraffiti performance.

During his opening-night performance, Meulman will literally rewrite the 1776 Declaration of Independence on site at the Salamatina Gallery. His Re-Declaration, which will take place over several days, will highlight all 1,337 of the historic words, resulting in 262 U.S. letter-sized pieces, executed in ink on paper. Showcasing the artistʼs fluid and hypnotic style, these “Letters” will remain on view and for sale until July 27.

According to the author Adam Eeuwens: “Calligraffiti is a combination of traditional calligraphy coupled with the speed of modern-day graffiti. It is an amalgam of an ancient, refined art form, fused with the raw force of rebellious street art. It combines the rhythm and regularity of Frakturʼs precise stroke with the perfect accidents of the vertical drip and splatter of the horizontal drop, creating a synthesis of opposites.” Meulman, one of the pioneers of this revolutionary art form, will break new ground by reinterpreting a document of the length and significance of the Declaration of Independence. The document has special meaning for the Amsterdam-based artist, who embraces elements of American culture as a whole, whether it be Pop Art, advertising, product packaging, skateboarding, graffiti or car design.

My work is dedicated to the art of writing,” Meulman explains. “I am inspired by ancient Japanese brush characters, Arabic pictorial script, illuminated medieval books and flourish-filled quill writing, of which the Declaration of Independence is one of the most beautiful and eloquent examples. My interest in this document runs deeper than its being an emblem of U.S. courage and democracy. Its powerful words set forth human rights which are universal and resonate with my own personal beliefs, especially with regards to taking risks in order to exercise oneʼs freedom of expression.

Born in Amsterdam in 1967, Niels Meulman is an internationally known artist, designer, and art director. Meulman began tagging in 1979 and became a graffiti legend by the time he was 18. Known as ‘Shoe’ within the graffiti community, his work evolved into a business for lettering and he furthered his technique by apprenticing under the Dutch graphic design master, Anthon Beeke.

In the nineties Meulman ran his own design company, Caulfield & Tensing, before joining the international advertising network BBDO. In recent years, he has been a Creative Director for MTV Europe, while also freelancing in typographic design. Meulman revolutionized the art of writing with Calligraffiti, an art form that fuses calligraphy and graffiti. He launched this movement in 2007 with a successful solo exhibition in Amsterdam, with contributions from graffiti pioneer and graphic artist Eric Haze and sneaker retailer Patta. Meulman has also teamed up with international record label Rush Hour, to mount a Calligraffiti exhibition entitled Different Strokes. He is currently working on exhibitions in Paris, Berlin and New York.

Widely acclaimed, Meulman’s designs and artwork are in the permanent collections of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Amongst his essential works are a signature shoe design for the British sports brand, Umbro; the re-styling of the Dutch television channel, TMF; calligraphy for the new Bols Genever bottle; the Christel Palace logo that was awarded by the Art Directors Club New York and line of luxury silk scarves for his label Unruly.

Jeff Soto "Lifecycle" exhibition at Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Jeff Soto
Lifecycle

Gallery I
Solo Exhibition

June 26, 2010 through July 24, 2010
Jonathan LeVine Gallery is pleased to present Lifecycle, an exhibition of new works by California based artist Jeff Soto, in what will be his third solo show at the gallery. In conjunction with this exhibition, the artist will be painting a site-specific public mural in New York City, and releasing a new limited-edition print.

Soto conveys narrative subject matter with dramatic lighting and textural richness in detailed and dynamic compositions. His work often communicates themes of nostalgia, fear, hope, and environmental issues. On the subject of his new series of paintings, however, the artist says:

My work has always indirectly told bits and pieces of my own story, my thoughts and past. This new body of work is still autobiographical without being self-portraiture, but whereas previous exhibitions focused on current events, environmentalism, politics, and war, this show deals with themes that are more personal, emotional and timeless.

As the show title suggests, works in Lifecycle refer to birth, death, and the voyage in between. The artist’s interest in time, mortality, fatherhood and generational relationships—within his own family and humankind in general—are explored through visual metaphors and symbolism.

Soto’s work exudes tension as his signature iconographic imagery continues to evolve. With background environments full of old machinery and industrial decay, Soto’s creatures inhabit desolate, forgotten spaces. The artist creates ominous worlds where quasi-divine apparitions with organic tendrils writhe from the cavities of smoking, robotic shells, as their lumbering frames preside over sprawling urban landscapes. Figures duel, wild flowers bloom and rainbows thrive, as dark smog and storm clouds loom amidst floating skulls.

Jeff Soto was born and raised in Southern California, where he currently resides with his wife and daughters. In 2002, Soto graduated with Distinction from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. In 2008, his work was the subject of an exhibition at Riverside Art Museum. He has published multiple books on his artwork, which has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world. The artist’s distinct color palette, subject matter and technique resonate with a growing audience: inspired by childhood toys, skateboarding, graffiti, hip-hop and popular culture. His bold, representational work is simultaneously accessible and stimulating.

KAWS / The Aldrich Contemporary Art museum

KAWS
Exhibition Opening
Sunday, June 27, 2010; 2:30 to 5:30 pm

June 27, 2010 – January 2, 2011

This first solo museum exhibition of the work of well-known artist and designer KAWS will include his most recent paintings, sculptures, and drawings, as well as a survey of apparel, product and graphic designs, and limited-edition toys. Originating at the crossroads of art, design, popular culture, and street savvy, KAWS’s output is quite unique. By playing off the different disciplines–namely street art, design, high art–and using each as an element in the other, the artist is revolutionizing the art world and widening the straightforward definitions of “high art.” With wit, irreverence, and even affection, KAWS takes infamous iconic entertainment characters and subversively reinterprets their appearances and personalities. He also creates his own cartoon characters of serpentine physical forms with signature X-ed out eyes. These highly charged characters, recognizable by and accessible to everyone, are cute and humorous artworks that ultimately both serve and criticize contemporary consumer culture.

Todd Schorr "Designed for Extinction" Exhibition at Ben Maltz Gallery

Exhibition Dates:
June 26 - September 11, 2010

Otis College of Art and Design is pleased to present the exhibition Todd Schorr: Designed for Extinction, to be held June 26 through September 11, 2010 at Ben Maltz Gallery. A public opening reception takes place Saturday June 26, 4-7pm, sponsored by Hurley, featuring music by GLUE ONE. A limited edition Hurley t-shirt designed by Schorr is available for purchase one night only, and Schorr conducts a book-signing of his recent monograph American Surreal published and presented by Last Gasp Books during the reception. Otis Continuing Education is offering exhibition-related, art-making workshops for kids and families during the exhibition July 10, 31, and August 21, 10am-12pm. The gallery hosts a conversation with Schorr and Curator Meg Linton on Saturday, September 11 at 3pm.

Todd Schorr: Designed for Extinction is a solo exhibition featuring 50+ paintings and preliminary drawings from the last ten years by Los Angeles-based artist Todd Schorr, a leading figure in the Pop Surrealism and Lowbrow art movements. Schorr is undeniably inspired by Renaissance masters such as Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel, and Salvador Dali, as well as the early animated cartoons of Walt Disney and Max Fleischer, underground comics best exemplified by Zap, and classic films from the 1930’s such as King Kong and Frankenstein. Using the exacting techniques of the old masters, his highly polished, fantastic paintings are intricate narratives about evolution and the plight of man. Schorr says: “Like any artist of worth, it took many long years of struggle and investigative thought along with trial and error as well as constant honing of technique to reach the point where I felt I had created a language which, when spoken well, would command some semblance of purpose. I work in what is best described as a surreal style but filtered through the mind and eyes of what is, for better or worse, uniquely American.”

INSITU .1

INSITU.1
Miajadas (Cáceres)
del 28 Junio al 4 Julio de 2010.

-ESCIF. (Valencia, 1980).

No buscan llegar a ninguna parte. Solo buscan pasárselo bien y disfrutar del recorrido".

The Hole is pleased to present Not Quite Open for Business

The Hole is pleased to present Not Quite Open for Business, a conceptual group show of unfinished art, unfinished poems, and unfinished symphonies. The installation is designed by Taylor McKimens and the show includes over twenty artists from our community. What does a “finished” piece mean anyway? Come tell us no, no, no we are doing it all wrong it needs more yellow on June 26 when we have to open the doors, ready or not.

BLARG opening a gallery immediately on the heels of Deitch Projects closing has been a struggle. Jeffrey leaving suddenly to be the director of the LA MOCA, us not knowing what to do with our- selves after eight years here, scrambling to figure out who would be on our team, trying to wran- gle artists, looking for a space, investors, a name, a logo. We were going to open two shows June 26th but our corporate sponsor pulled out at the last second on the big expensive exhibition. We scrambled to find a different source for the 80K and FOUND IT only to have, two days later, the space for the show revoked. No way around that one; we threw in the towel.

Then suddenly our other exhibition, the inaugural show at the Tony Goldman space, was can- celled! The artist was under too much pressure to make this big installation and we were running out of time to execute his idea well. Which is totally understandable and did not make me go out- side and cry on a stoop. I GIVE UP! Or rather I did until it occurred to me:
Turn into the skid! The Hole: NOT QUITE open for business. What if the gallery didn’t look fin- ished, lights burned out, cracks in the floor, a mop bucket still sitting out. What if the sheetrock was showing and the benches were half painted and the press release full of typoos?

We called our artists and said hey, want to be in our first show opening in less than a month? They all said they didn’t have enough time, were too busy, blah blah blah. We said GREAT! Give us an incomplete piece. Give us a piece that has been on your wall half done for two years. Give us a drawing that you just can’t bring yourself to finish from your flat files. Put half your makeup on and come give us most of a performance!

The show is not about process-based art or deliberately “unfinished” artworks, it is about getting caught with your pants down and your lipstick smudged and your armpits sweaty because you didn’t have time to take a shower before YOUR FIRST GALLERY SHOW.

Dave Cooper "Mangle" Solo Exhibition at Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Dave Cooper
Mangle
Solo Exhibition

June 26—July 24, 2010
Opening Reception: Saturday, June 26, 7—9pm

Jonathan LeVine Gallery is pleased to announce Mangle — new drawings and paintings of twisted ladies, an exhibition of works by Ottawa-based artist Dave Cooper, in what will be his second solo show at the gallery.

In Mangle, Cooper presents a new series of graphite drawings on polypropylene paper and oil paintings on canvas, featuring his subject matter of choice—fleshy females. Cooper’s unique aesthetic is informed by his obsession with creating billowy, gelatinous landscapes and stylized women with un-idealized physical appearances. The shapes of these nude or scantily clad figures are often exaggeratedly lumpy, with large heads, bulging eyes, shiny red cheeks and toothy grins. They interact with one another in ways that appear disturbingly violent, suggestively sensual, or both, implying bizarre narratives of perverse scenarios and intense human drama.

Through the challenging, disturbing quality of his imagery, Cooper continues to explore themes of libido, hedonism, body image, fantasy, and ambiguity with refined skill and technique. His process consists of building thin layers of sheer color and fine glaze to create smooth texture and translucent opulence to the round contours of his full-figured subjects and their surrounding environments. By applying details traditionally regarded as undesirable physical characteristics such as veiny skin, ruddy complexion and cellulite to every plump, dimpled fold of flab, Cooper’s paintings expose the artist’s admiration and fascination with the natural curves of the feminine form in zaftig proportions, beyond conventional health or beauty standards.

In the artist’s words: “A red rose is beautiful but how ubiquitous! I’d rather look in a dark corner for interesting patches of moss, lichen or mushrooms. Fashion models are utterly boring. Instead, my heart races at the sight of an awkward-looking girl with unique flaws and imperfections.”

Dave Cooper was born in 1967 in a small fishing village in Nova Scotia, Canada. He is currently based in Ottawa, with his wife and two children. Cooper is a self-taught artist, inspired by artistic mentors in his youth. He enjoyed a successful career in the American underground comic scene of the late 1990’s as the author/illustrator of award-winning graphic novels and as a designer, producer, and creator in the field of animation. In 2003, the artist decided to focus his energies on oil painting and refining his fine art. In the years since, his artwork has been exhibited at galleries in New York, Los Angeles and Paris. He has released two books featuring his oil paintings and a third is on the way, with introductions written by Hollywood celebrity collectors including comedic actor David Cross, as well as filmmakers David Cronenberg and Oscar-nominated writer/director of Pan's Labyrinth, Guillermo del Toro.

Mark Bode's "Wizards, Lizards, and Broads" at 1:AM Gallery

Mark Bode
Wizards, Lizards, and Broads

Opening reception: Friday, June 25th, 2010 from 7-10pm.

1:AM gallery invites you to the opening of Wizards, Lizards, and Broads: a 50-year retrospective of Mark and Vaughn Bode’s art. Wizards, Lizards, and Broads will showcase the characters that have been greatly influencing street art all over the world for the past three decades. There will be original art by Mark Bode and works by Vaughn Bode, which have never been viewed publicly. Special guest artists include Vincent Bode, KC Angel, Stan 153, King 157, and James O'Barr (creator of the Crow).

Mark Bode’s Thoughts on the upcoming Wizards, Lizards, and Broads Exhibition: Since this is the first ever Bode solo show in San Francisco, we decided not to hold back and are pulling out originals by my father Vaughn from the archives as well as some of my most favorite art pieces I’ve created over the past 32 years. We will be displaying original comic pages from Cobalt 60 (which will soon be a major motion picture by Universal), spray can paintings and original Vaughn sketches depicting the iconic Bode characters that are respected around the world as the very beginnings of hip hop subway art imagery. This is a must see show as Vaughn’s original art is rarely exhibited. Also on display will be never-before-seen-one-of-a-kind Bode PUMA kicks, signed giclee prints, and a Bode clothing launch hot off the press by TRUDE COLORS. Works will be of various price points, making the art accessible to both serious collectors and fans.

I am looking forward to this show and being together in a definitive art show with my father’s dear brother Vincent, and paying homage to the art of, who is not only my beloved father, but also a heads up to my spiritual and artistic guide, Vaughn Bode.

The opening reception of Wizards, Lizards, and Broads at 1:AM gallery begins on Friday, June 25th, 2010 from 7-10pm. The opening will be a 21+ event with DJ Don Kainoa on wheels of steel and the 1:AM bartenders serving up the drinks. The exhibit will be on display through July 31st, 2010.

Upper Playground Presents: KC Ortiz Capsule Collection

Upper Playground Presents: KC Ortiz Capsule Collection

KC Ortiz is one of the most engaging photographers we’ve seen, a member of the Chicago based art collective ‘We Are Supervision’ and also the designer behind four new t-shirts that Upper Playground is releasing. While his photographic style documents stark, personal and eye opening accounts of the far reaching corners of this world, when it comes to design KC Ortiz generally takes a much more light hearted approach and aims to make fundamentally simple, “weird, funky stuff.”

KC Ortiz Capsule Collection (No Pity in the City, Jungle Boogie, It’s Good 2B The King, Kids Want Blood). And this line of tees is just that. All four t-shirts are available at Upper Playground retail locations and online at the Upper Playground web store.
