Aiko, Junko Mizuno, and Samuel Lowder "VIVID FICTION" exhibition at Merry Karnowsky Gallery

The VIVID FICTION: AIKO, JUNKO MIZUNO & SAMUEL LOWDER (FrePrs)

Exhibition Dates: July 31 – August 28, 2010
Opening Reception: Saturday, July 31, 8 - 11pm
Gallery Hours: Tuesday-Saturday, 12 - 6pm

Merry Karnowsky Gallery is proud to present Vivid Fiction, an exhibition by innovative artists Aiko, Junko Mizuno, and Samuel Lowder, AKA "FrePrs".

Aiko (Nakagawa) has been a bold influence on the contemporary art scene since she co-founded the Brooklyn-based international art collective, FAILE in 1999. In 2008, Aiko left FAILE to focus on her solo work, which exhibits a grittiness and grace inspired by the streets. Using collage, stencil, silkscreen, brushwork, and spray paint, Aiko explores depictions of femininity and sexuality in her paintings of bunnies, butterflies, and vampy women. She calls this body of paintings "Debauchery." Aiko's solo work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in the US, Japan, China, Italy, Spain, Germany, and the UK.

In her series of paintings entitled "Deranged," painter Junko Mizuno mixes adorable with grotesque in a unique style that has been called "Kawaii Noir." Inspired by pop art, erotica, and Japanese horror films, her neo-psychedelic paintings depict cartoonish females with curvaceous figures in nightmarish circumstances. Mizuno has published numerous graphic novels, including Cinderalla, Little Fluffy Gigolo Pelu, Princess Mermaid, and Pure Trance. Her artwork has shown in galleries in New York, Toronto, Seattle, Paris, Milan, Tokyo, Rome, Berlin, and Barcelona.

Samuel Lowder began his artistic career as graffiti artist "FrePrs" in and around Los Angeles in the early '90s. By the end of the decade, he had moved from freehand graffiti to stenciling and pasting. Inspired by old advertisements, cartoons, and cinema, Lowder's clean stencil techniques and vibrating blended color are reminiscent of early pop art pioneers, but with a more painterly affectation. Although still a freehand artist, stenciling has became the prime medium and form of expression for Lowder, whose work entitled "Dynamite," treads the line between simple design and complex layering.

Invader Pow prints 2010

Invader continues to overrun cities with his mosaic creations at an astonishing rate (most recently San Diego, above) and these prints are a brave effort at capturing the charm of his craft. The artstock paper is embossed with a relief tile pattern and then printed with foil inks for a reflective quality so ceramic-like you'll be tempted to eat your dinner off them.

Bob Roberts / The man, the myth, the legend: Bob Roberts. Few people have had the impact on tattooing that Bob Roberts has. His sheer artistic genius is sublime, and his biography reads the same way. For over thirty years he has been part of the vanguard of talented tattoo artists who, unbeknownst to them at the time, have pushed tattooing from a craft to an art form. The list of artists Bob has worked alongside reads like a star-studded who’s who of the tattoo artist hall of fame, of which Bob would no doubt be a member if such a thing existed. He apprenticed with Colonel Todd and Bob Shaw at the infamous Pike and then worked alongside Cliff Raven, Greg Irons, Paul Rogers, Jack Rudy and Don Ed Hardy. His own shop, Spotlight Tattoo, continues to house a roster of talented artists bent on following in Bob’s footsteps.

Bob’s creative genius is not limited to tattooing and painting, he is also an accomplished musician. His musical career reads much the same as his tattoo resume. Bob has played with Ruben and the Jets, Hot Tuna, The Offs, New York Dolls, Johnny Thunders, to name a few. His life has been “rock and roll” as well; Frisco, New York, LA, Europe, Japan, Bob has done the world tour. He’s also ridden across most of the United States on a Harley, and he’s “ridden it like he stole it.” That is how Bob lives his life, and his artwork reflects it.

But the thing that stands out the most to me about Bob is his persona. Ungovernable, fiercely independent, Bob does not compromise…. He does it HIS way. And thankfully for us, Bob Roberts has forever changed tattooing for the better.

Escif "Contra la pared" at Montana Gallery Barcelona

ESCIF

100 leading figures on Urbanart ".
