Dabs Myla "Tokyo Deluxe" at Thinkspace Gallery

Dabs Myla
"Tokyo Deluxe"

Project Room

September 3rd - September 24th
Opening Reception: Fri, September 3rd 7-10PM
with all artists in attendance

Thinkspace is pleased to present Tokyo Deluxe, an exhibition of new works and an installation from Australian artistic duo Dabs Myla in what will be their first major solo exhibition following numerous group show appearances with our gallery.

Dabs Myla's new body of work is based on the overwhelming experiences the two artists had while visiting one of the most hectic cities in the world, Toyko. While creating a show about Tokyo is a bit like shooting a fish in a barrel due to all the visual stimuli found there, the couple took on the task and soaked up as much pop culture as their minds could take. Between taking photographs of the architecture and sketching up ideas wherever they went, Dabs Myla feel they have created a collection of paintings that reflects the stamp left on their brains from their trip to Tokyo. Our project room will be a virtual visual overload this September as the pair fill it with a wide array of new works layered on top of a full room mural and additional installation elements including die-cut figures, buildings, clouds, and more. 'Tokyo Deluxe' promises an immersive experience.

Dabs is a prolific illustrator and graffiti artist who spent his teenage years growing up in Melbourne in the Early '90s. The graffiti scene influenced him greatly in his style and technique. These days Dabs' characters come to life in more contextualized environments than ever before, whether they are painted on walls in the streets, or on canvases for a gallery setting.

Myla was also raised in Melbourne where she was obsessed with detailed painting and drawing from an early age. Throughout her life Myla has continued to develop her artistic ways, and now concentrates on detailed cities and landscapes. Three years ago, along with Dabs, they combined forces to solely collaborate on their works together.

The duo's work has shown the world over including such high profile shows as last November's 'Golden Age' show in downtown Los Angeles as well as the recent Green Day 21st Century Breakdown show that took place in the UK at Stolen Space and was curated by fellow artist Logan Hicks.

Dabs Myla currently live in Hollywood, Los Angeles, spending everyday working on artworks, painting walls and being influenced by the wonders of their new city.

Take a 'Sneak Peek' at the works for "Tokyo Deluxe" coming together here.

A Thousand Bucks for Henning Weskamp solo show at Vicious Gallery

A Thousand Bucks for Henning Weskamp

A Thousand Bucks for Henning Weskamp.

pool gallery presents: Michael Leon, Vexhall Curated by Arkitip

pool gallery presents:

VEXHALL MICHAEL LEON
CURATED BY ARKITIP

Vernissage 2 September 19-22 h
Exhibition 3 September - 1 October, 2010

pool gallery is proud to present american artist and designer Michael Leon‘s first solo show in Germany. The title for the exhibition "Vexhall" originates with the term vexillology (lat. vexillum flag and suffix -logy "study of").

Since his childhood Leon has been fascinated by flags. The United Nations, Olympics, World's Fair and other idealized visions of world community has always inspired his artwork and design. Vexhall is composed of pieces that draw literally from flag design, mixed with Leon‘s own design sensibility and personal history. By going back and forth between reverence and irreverence for vexilology, Leon has created flags for real and imagined countries, events, friends, emotions, ex-girlfriends, and everything in between. Some using the strict guidelines of flag design, next to others that may have been scribbled on a napkin or inspired by a dream. In doing so, this Vexhall (Hall of Flags) is Leon‘s own personal and nostalgic United Nations.

Michael Leon was raised amidst the skateboard culture of the late 80‘s and early 90‘s. His work lives in a unique place between the worlds of art and art direction, embodying the freedom of thought and Do-It-Yourself tenacity of a skateboarder - a combination that has produced impressive work in many forums and mediums including painting, prints, photography, and video.

Since Leon‘s first solo exhibition in 2002, his artwork has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world.

BUFF MONSTER “Beyond The Pink” at Corey Helford Gallery

Corey Helford Gallery Presents
BUFF MONSTER
“Beyond The Pink”

Solo Exhibition

Opening Reception Saturday, September 4, 2010 from 7‑10pm
On View September 4 – September 22, 2010

September shines once again with the return of Los Angeles street artist Buff Monster to present “Beyond The Pink”, his fourth solo exhibition at Corey Helford Gallery.

For “Beyond The Pink”, Buff Monster creates a new series of acrylic-on-panel works that radiate with his signature pink neons, Superflat style, and disarmingly subversive characters. The artist’s futuristic playgrounds bounce with creative expression as multi-hued argyle pyramids intermix with melting facades and floating faces.

Presenting his works in a larger and more detailed context than before, Buff Monster revisits his classic ice cream and maraschino cherry imagery with an eyeful of fresh inspiration. Returning from his recent travels to open the “Art From The New World” museum exhibition in Bristol, England, the artist adopts a more experimental approach, blending his iconic graphics with new landscapes, as well as introducing portraits for the first time.

This new body of work is influenced by the history of Western art that I saw throughout Europe. My time at the Louvre viewing Renaissance paintings was truly inspiring. The National Gallery in London had some amazing pieces as well. And then visiting the Tate Modern was a bit of a shock after seeing nothing but classical paintings, but the pop stars like Lichtenstein and Warhol still get my pulse racing,” Buff Monster adds.

Upstairs in the loft, a vibrant series of flattened metal spray cans customized by Buff Monster will be on display. Open to the public, the reception for “Beyond The Pink” will take place on Saturday, September 4 from 7 to 10pm, and the show will be on view until September 22, 2010.

International POSTER BOY: THE WAR OF ART Book Celebration at Carmichael Gallery

POSTER BOY: THE WAR OF ART - BOOK RELEASE AND SIGNING The International Poster Boy Celebration

Reception: Saturday, August 28, 2010, 6-8pm

Art Fans and First Amendment advocates unite! Carmichael Gallery is proud to present the Los Angeles launch of POSTER BOY: THE WAR OF ART, the debut monograph from the notorious New York City-based Poster Boy.

The 96 pages of this attractively designed, compact book from Mark Batty Publisher showcase some of the most eye-catching and controversial subway mash-ups created by Poster Boy to date, including his infamous attack 2009 on the Museum of Modern Art’s advertising campaign. Many of the featured works have never been seen before and include a number of collaborations with Aakash Nihalani and a selection of witty homages to fellow artists, including Keith Haring, Damian Hirst, Invader, Princess Hijab, Decapitator, MOMO and Booker.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Dubbed by the New York Times as an “anti-consumerist Zorro with a razor blade, a sense of humor and a talent for collage,” Poster Boy deftly rearranges the text and images of subway posters, reclaiming walls from the ad industry one slice of vinyl at a time. This artful and clever repurposing of advertising has been hailed by the Guardian UK as “witty, web-savvy and economical… the only materials it requires are chutzpah, imagination and a 50-cent blade,” and, though the work exists only in New York City, Poster Boy has garnered a worldwide following.

“Poster Boy: The War of Art” is the first book to feature Poster Boy’s renegade mashups—corporate copy slashed and re-pasted as sharp, playful puns and turns of phrase rich with innuendo and political punch. Under the edge of Poster Boy’s blade, beautiful models turn ghastly and iconic spokespeople become mouthpieces for guerrilla slogans. Poster Boy proves no ad is safe from art’s incisive interventions.

Join the Poster Boy Collective at four different parties in four different cities on the same night to get your copy of THE WAR OF ART, view a series of videos featuring Poster Boy’s work to date and celebrate the launch of K.A.R.A.T.E, a legal defense fund created to support artists in times of need.

Art does change the world, but only for those who have the imagination to realize it.
– Poster Boy

Signed books and limited edition prints by Poster Boy will be available for purchase on the evening. A portion of book and art sales will be contributed to K.A.R.A.T.E.

If you can’t attend the LA launch but live in New York, Miami or London, you can meet Poster Boy and pick up your copy of THE WAR OF ART at 17 Frost Gallery, AE District Gallery or Pure Evil Gallery, respectively.

This one night only event is not to be missed!

Poster Boy is an anonymous New York City-based street art collective whose only utensil is a razor. Poster Boy is known for collaged works created by cutting out sections of the self-adhesive advertisement posters in the platforms of New York City subway stations and pasting them back in different positions. Garish corporate communications become bold, satiric, socio-political statements at the hand of Poster Boy.

FIFTY24SF Gallery Presents “Over Normal” New Works by Stanley Donwood

FIFTY24SF Gallery Presents “Over Normal”
New Works by Stanley Donwood

Fifty24SF Gallery presents “Over Normal”- a solo exhibition by Stanley Donwood and his first ever showing in the United States.

When thinking of iconic imagery in music from the last 20 years, Stanley Donwood’s work with Radiohead invariably comes to mind - and for good reason. Where Radiohead’s music stretched the auditory horizons and painted musical sceneries of mans place in the modern world, Donwood’s imagery and packaging forced us to face the gravity of the music from the minute the album hit our hands; and by creating cryptic, academic and (at times) dystopian layouts, the albums themselves became as striking and relevant as the music they contained.

Although Stanley Donwood generally avoids the grandeur of media and would prefer to be undersold, to speak only in terms of his work with Radiohead would be a disservice. From his exhibitions of intricate etchings at Lazarides Gallery in London, to the vibrant works that made up his show at Iguapop Gallery in Barcelona, Donwood’s gallery work has consistently mixed personal and political emotions with modesty and humor.

For “Over Normal”, the catalyst for the large works featured in the show is in Los Angeles, where Stanley began to notice (with equal parts amazement and distress) that the advertisements bombarding him on the multilane highways were made of seven basic colors, immediately grabbing viewers’ attention in a primal way. More recently, Stanley noticed a parallel between the use of those colors and an influx of spam emails that promised everything from more fruitful sex lives, to cheap foreclosed properties at the expense of someone else’s misery. The word’s that were used in the emails were formatted in the same fundamental way as color in the advertisement’s had been used: to grab unconscious attention and tell a story without the viewer knowing it. Marrying the immediate words used in these emails with the attractive and distressing colors of the advertisements, Stanley has produced a line of seven vibrant, original pieces for this exhibition.

Stanley has also produced a 12 page newspaper to accompany the show, this explains how he came about putting together a neuron firing sound installation in an artificial neural network which is also featured in the show and is entitled 'The Overnormaliser'.

“Over Normal” will run from September 2nd – October 27th with an opening reception occurring on September 2nd from 7:30PM – 10:00PM at FIFTY24SF Gallery

Backjumps Volume 4.2 The Junior Issue

BACKJUMPS 4.2 "THE JUNIOR ISSUE"
Urban Communication and Aesthetics – Exhibition and Workshops for Kids and Still-Kids
Opening party Friday 27th August.
Show runs until 26th September, daily midday until 7pm

Martha Cooper (New York/USA), Delta (Amsterdam/NL), Jonone (New York/USA, Paris/F), Dave The Chimp (Berlin/D), ASH (Kopenhagen/DK), Skki (Paris/F), Mode2 (Berlin/D, London/GB), Pips Lab (Amsterdam/NL), Poet & Aski (Berlin/D) Adrian Nabi.

Backjumps – the magazine and exhibition project concerned with urban communication and aesthetics – continues its new format (Volume 4) in 2010: This time, the project space in Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien will host an exhibition especially designed for children. All works of art and installation pieces will be installed and presented according to a child ́s view.

For the second edition Volume 4.2, curator Adrian Nabi invited nine international artists, who work in the context of street art, to present their view of „childfriendly“ spaces and art experience. The exhibition takes as a starting point, that children often react very curious and enthusiastic when facing a work of art, but this is not reflected in the curatorial approaches and modes of presentation for contemporary art.

The artists will transport their experiences in exposure to urban space and the stimulus satiation of the streets into the exhibition space and translate these for children ́s eyes and senses. They will attempt to develope aesthetics forms, which adress children without being childish- and speak to adults as well. A central aspect are the workshops as an integral part of the exhibition: The space will be used for activities throughout the opening hours.

An exhibition by Backjumps in cooperation with Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien.
Mariannenplatz 2, 10997 Berlin
