Christina Empedocles "As Evidenced..." at David B. Smith Gallery

Christina Empedocles
As Evidenced...

October 1st - October 30th 2010

Opening Reception: this Friday, October 1st, 7pm - 10pm
Artist in attendance
Free and open to the public

The David B. Smith Gallery is very pleased to present As Evidenced..., a solo exhibition by Christina Empedocles. As Evidenced... will feature Empedocles' highly realistic two-dimensional drawings as well as new three-dimensional work and a site-specific installation. Empedocles is currently featured in the October issue of American Art Collector Magazine, and her work has been recently acquired by very influential and important collectors. We invite you to take this opportunity to see, enjoy and acquire her work.

The exhibition will open Friday, October 1, 2010 and run through Saturday, October 30, 2010. Please join us for a reception with the artist on Friday, October 1, from 7 to 10pm.

These drawings and paintings combine the very best of traditional naturalist art with surprising touches of pop art and contemporary postmodernism. Empedocles draws from a background and love of geology and ornithology, and tries to be as realistic as possible. She captures images from photographs and memorabilia, placing the images in kaleidoscope patterns and juxtaposing them against white space, bent pages and tape - so realistic you could almost reach out to remove them from the paper. And yet, it is the disconnect between the representation of the image and the understanding of reality that makes her work so unusual and so distinctive. Here is a masterful artist whose reflection of reality exceeds our expectations, and she invites us to contrast that reality with idealized representations and images.

Empedocles uses images of birds, animals, people and personal memorabilia in her work. From comic strips to concert tickets to images of celebrities, Empedocles, herself, describes her work as "obsessive realism," mixing idealized images and reality in a unique perspective. By folding and cutting images, using sculpture, painting and collage, she records personal moments and impressions with both a photographic and impressionistic quality. Her work is the result of hours of looking. As Colorado art critic and writer Leanne Haase Goebel writes in an essay prepared for this exhibition, "Drawing allows her to record these artifacts with more detail than can be captured in a photograph. Her documentation is as exact and purposeful as she can make it, and serves to monumentalize the moments that they represent." Empedocles' work is personal and visually inviting, and represents a unique perspective that challenges the viewer to separate the rendered image from the real.

Christina Empedocles was born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She earned her BA in studio art and geology from Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio and her MFA in painting from California College of the Arts, San Francisco, California. In 2008, Empedocles was awarded a public commission at the University of California, San Francisco for the Mission Bay Campus Community Center Mural. Her work has also been featured in Manifest's International Drawing Annual, Studio Visit Magazine, Color & Color, and American Art Collector Magazine. She currently shows in Denver, San Francisco and New York.

CARHARTT X UDG DJ Bag

CARHARTT X UDG

Since the digital revolution came up, for a long time the DJ world was divided into strictly analogue and strictly digital advocates. However, today more and more DJs are making use of the advantages of both formats not just because digital media are less heavy than their analogue counter parts, but also because they are very convenient to work with. Yet, with the wonderful new diversity of setup options, one tiny problem arises: how to best stow away and carry around the holy trinity of music storage formats the record, the disc, and the notebook computer? After all, who wants to haul three different bags to a club or, even worse, have to check in three different bags at the airport?

Carhartt and UDG have now come up with a great all in one solution that will help you avoid all this hassle. It is a compact DJ bag that can hold your laptop, your vinyl collection, and your CDs, all at the same time. Sounds great on paper, but how does it play out in real life?

In order to find that out, we asked a select circle of DJs to test the Carhartt X UDG bag for us. They used it in their daily businesses, jam-packed it with their gear, gadgets, and record collections, hauled it around on flights, from continent to continent, from club to club, and exposed it to all sides of a DJ’s life. From the 27th of September onwards you can read the experiences of Cosmin TRG, Benji B, and Modeselektor each week at www.carhartt-wip.com/music.

Mike Friedrich and Timrobot "NOW IN 2D" at West Berlin Gallery

West Berlin Gallery proudly presents Mike Friedrich and Timrobot - NOW IN 2D* from September 30th to October 30th 2010 at the West Berlin Gallery.

The 3D trend is rising and everything is jam-packed with 3D effects, new products flood the market everyday, everything gets a 3D facelift. It's like Botox for the media. Even the art world is not safe from this trend. But do we need all this? Mike Friedrich and Timrobot - both members of The World Organisation, a Berlin based art collective- say «NO!» At least not yet.

At the West Berlin Gallery they will show a potpourri of illustrations and paintings dealing with the 3D theme in a humorous and satiric way. Watch as 2D collide when Timrobot's cute characters enter Mike Friedrich's underworld. Coming from a background of comics, Saturday morning cartoons and a time where 3D was more like blue and red lines than hightech effects, the artists want to set a statement and present their artworks in a maybe not so serious way – completely in 2D.

* Special 2D-glasses will be provided at the Opening at 7pm on the 30th of September. The evening will be completed by music and drinks to make it a date.

Jaybo Monk “Hazardous Brushstrokes” New Paintings at Circleculture Gallery

"Hazardous Brushstrokes"
New Paintings by Jaybo Monk

October 01, 2010 to November 06, 2010
Opening September 30th 2010 7pm

New works by Jaybo Monk at Circleculture Gallery. With the solo show "Hazardous Brushstrokes", Jaybo Monk explores how the process of painting becomes uncontrollable and takes on a life of its own. The success of the paintings is not dependent on the artist's will, but rather on his intuition and pure accident.

Jaybo Monk is a runaway, setting out and wandering along in a physical as well as in a creative sense. In his youth, he ran away from his house in southern France, settling in Berlin-Kreuzberg at the beginning of the 1980’s, where he busied himself as a graffiti writer, street actor and hip-hop musician. When he founded the streetwear label “Irie Daily” and the cultural magazine “Style” at the beginning of the 1990’s, his influence on Berlin’s youth culture could be clearly seen. Even today, urban subculture is the driving force behind his artistic activities.

This is especially true of his paintings; they are erratic and chaotic as they directly quote various fragments of urban subculture. They often plumb great psychological depths, thematically speaking, with lightness meeting existentialistic melancholy, aggressiveness meeting passion and a seemingly standard romantic streak and visionary dimension.

Feiyue X ANDRÉ at colette

Feiyue X ANDRÉ at colette

FEIYUE invited the artist ANDRÉ to design a model for the new Feiyue collection. For this exceptional collaboration, FEIYUE and ANDRÉ have chosen a highly selective and very qualitative distribution system, with availability in only one point of sale per country. Naturally, colette was given the exclusive distribution rights for France.

The artistic project involved Feiyue’s first model, the FE-LO, and resulted in the creation of an understated white fabric tennis shoe enhanced by the now-famous ‘Mr A’ and a pair of matching laces.

Anno Domini presents "Better Than 2009" solo exhibition by MOMO

Anno Domini presents

"Better Than 2009"
solo exhibition by MOMO (USA)

Artist's Reception: Friday, October 1, 2010 from 8 p.m. 'til late
Free and open to the public

MOMO is known for thoughtful post-graffiti: tagging his name the width of Manhattan, creating over-sized collage, a fake New Yorker magazine cover, tide powered sculpture, a computer script which makes his art for him, and prints, paintings, and videos that rely on chance for fun and substance. In 2009 Rojo published his first monograph “3am-6am” and Y-3/Adidas created the MOMO shoes. In 2010 his art and installations were hosted by museums in Spain and Brazil, a residency in Florida and Fame Festival in Italy.

“Better Than 2009” at Anno Domini continues his recent experiments in paint with some support materials demonstrating his previous outdoor and system based art.

MOMO grew up in the East Bay but traveled most of his life before settling in New York. He joined a graffiti crew in 1999 while living in Spain, found his use of color while employed in the Caribbean, and fell for outside art while living outside: in a cave for a year, in a truck for a year, and in a tent for a year.

IAM Gallery presenta “Tarot Sans Queue ni Tête” 3ttman

“Tarot Sans Queue ni Tête”
3ttman

Carhartt Brand Book Volume 4

THE CARHARTT BRAND BOOK VOLUME 4

Celebrate with us the latest Carhartt Brand Book!
Volume 4 presents a significant mix of the brand’s history and its current state of mind: while remaining true to its heritage and traditions it doesn’t shy away from innovation.

An extensive part of the Brand Book Nr. 4 is dedicated to the French director and actor Mathieu Kassovitz. He attained international fame with his movie La Haine, which won him Best Director at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival. In an indepth interview Kassovitz talks about his love for the cinema, his work with directing legends such as Steven Spielberg and his longtime relationship with the Carhartt brand. The bold Frenchman exclusively presents Carhartt classics in an impressive photo series shot by Alessandro Zuek Simonetti. The detailed and caring portrait coincides with a feature on La Haine in the new Brand Book division Carhartt In The Movies.

Furthermore, Volume 4 presents Fall/Winter 2010 by giving a comprehensive overview of all product lines, including an exclusive sneak preview of lifestyle images from the women’s collection. Moreover, it highlights our successful venture with A.P.C. and features the results of this collaboration. The established series A History In The Making gives a detailed glimpse into Carhartt’s history as a brand. The 1960s are the heart of this chapter. The era in which Carhartt Inc. completely redefined itself by entering new territory in distribution, strategies in marketing and product development. In front of The Black Curtain you meet old friends and new faces. Carhartt’s art director and graphic artist Tim Kottmann, aka Zeek & Destroy, who developed new ad illustrations for the Fall/Winter 2010 season, talks about his cultural background and his working methods. Aloe Blacc gives insight into his musical career. Pontus Alv explains his drive to produce movies and Mat Fowler from Playarea chats about the influence skateboarding had on his career. All of these artists of different origins have one thing in common: a combination of heritage and vision that makes their work stand out for us.

Enjoy the latest issue of the Carhartt Brand Book as part of a series that’s on its way to becoming a treasured collector’s item! Available exclusively at Carhartt Stores and official Carhartt dealers.

Victor Reyes "War Paint" at Known Gallery

VICTOR REYES | WAR PAINT
Opening September 25th, 2010 | 8-11pm
Runs September 25th - October 16th, 2010

‘War Paint’ is a visual commentary on the journey from Victor Reyes’ Southern California roots to present day and encapsulates his sentiments about Graffiti as a medium and a vehicle for artists. A process distilled over the last decade, these conceptual and literal images are a survey of the artist’s feelings about the potential of his community and the hidden meaning of the writing on the wall.

Victor Reyes has been painting since the early 90s; his work has been shown extensively around the world, in Bosnia, Germany, Switzerland, Taipei, Japan, and Miami. Recent shows include MISSPELLED at Robert Berman E6 Gallery San Francisco, blue.print.for.space / Primary Flight at Miami Art Basel 2009, Public Provocations at Carhartt Projects in Germany 2009, Will Rise at Robert Berman Gallery Los Angeles, and Letters First, a traveling show in Los Angeles/Tokyo/Seoul/Barcelona 2006-2008.

BEN JONES "Concept Unification" Exhibition at Loyal Gallery

BEN JONES
CONCEPT UNIFICATION

September 24 - October 24, 2010

OPENING RECEPTION FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 24, 6-8 pm

New Ben Jones Exhibition Could Bring "Concept Unification"
With a new series of painted canvases, American artist Ben Jones has today created the exhibition "Concept Unification" for the art gallery LOYAL in Malmö, Sweden.

This new group of "Concept Unification" paintings exist in rooms and spaces with multiple levels. We can see a room as a space for exploration. Tables are set forth for experimentation suggesting problems to solve before reaching the next level. A quest for advancement and lucidity. The imagery is intended to work on many levels, crossing from reality into the imaginary, or rather from one level of reality into another, much like when advancing from one level of a video game to the next.

The paintings seem to have been born in a retro-technological Tron-like computer rendering universe. Ben Jones is known to combine elements of sculpture, painting drawing, video and digital in single work. In his "video paintings" his own complex animations are projected on a static canvas of geometric shapes and morphing figures. Creating a work that on a whole creates a tension between the static and kinetic and suggests a space that exists beyond the limits of the canvas.

Jones' own color and shape shorthand developed to be consistent and define representation of a form, just enough to read it as an object, refers to the use of the object. Ladders climb between worlds. Tables, a surface for research and development of ideas. Dogs are cute and loyal companions on a journey, and also can be seen as comical symbols and willing abettors. Not to get stuck in a pattern continually. Find ways to push forms forward. Symbols are drawn from various sources, a mash up of minimalism and 80's video games, pulling in references from all over the cultural capitaL.

Ben Jones is a perfect example of the innovation, inspiration and determination that exemplify America's most successful young artists. He believes in his brainchild to the point where he is willing to work without motor for months.

Jones made the exhibition during inhabitation of studios in Providence, Rhode Island and Los Angeles, CA where he is actively pursuing a career in television.

This exhibition demonstrates the qualities that make young artists such a powerful force for culture creation in the American scene and in international communities. It is the same qualities that will lead to artistic recovery. "We are especially proud of this dedication and resourcefulness. I applaud Jones and all of the artists we are exhibiting at LOYAL. We are grateful for their contributions to the artistic community." says Martin Lilja, who heads up LOYAL gallery along with his partner Amy Giunta.

PRISM is pleased to present MISERICORDIA

PRISM is pleased to present MISERICORDIA, opening Friday, September 24th from 8-10 pm and on view through December 4th.

The exhibition brings together Masters from the Renaissance and work by contemporary artists. It juxtaposes 15th to 17th Century Old Masters with performance video from the 1970s and contemporary artworks. The works examine the treatment of Mercy as represented from devotional paintings to the use of the artist 's body as a metaphor for the suffering of humankind in contemporary works. It emphasizes how these artists explore pain, fear and penance, in the sense that today we either fail to rejoice in God's Mercy or that we are too occupied with personal matters to be merciful towards others.

In the contemporary works we might not be immediately aware of Mercy's presence. But Mercy can be found, especially in its absence, as a call to action for our society to change. Ultimately, these works demand that society be more merciful, stop suffering, and help those left outside. These artists beg the individual to come forward out of the mass, be responsible, and move to action. Mercy is an individually realized choice.

Works by the artists Marina Abramovi, Joseph Beuys, Monica Bonvicini, Louise Bourgeois, Chris Burden, James Lee Byars, Lucio Fontana, Terence Koh, Anders Krisár, Giovanni di Marco, Jonathan Meese, Giovanni Battista Naldini, Olaf Nicolai, Jen DeNike, Angel Otero, Antonio di Pietro, Sterling Ruby, Katharina Sieverding, Bill Viola, and xhafabdessemed (Sislej Xhafa and Adel Abdessemed) will assess how the artistic expression of Mercy is demonstrated, has transitioned, vanished, and in some cases persevered and reappeared through centuries and multiple artistic mediums.

The gallery is especially pleased to have three exceptional works by Emile Antoine-Bourdelle, Felice Ficherelli and Alessandro Gherardini on loan from the Haukohl Family Collection, a world-class private collection based in Houston, Texas. It is the largest private collection of Florentine painting in America.

A scholarly catalog is being published as a companion to the exhibition and features essays by academic writers David Carrier, Alex Gartenfeld and Dimitri Ozerkov, and is designed by Jonathan Zawada.

Acclaim Magazine and Backwoods Gallery present "Shake That Ass" by Yone.

Acclaim Magazine and Backwoods Gallery is proud to present 'Shake That Ass' by Yone.

Refill and Halfsleeve will be presenting the Sydney exhibition launching the night after.

Yasumase 'Yone' Yonehare is undoubtedly one of the most dynamic and influential magazine editors and photographers in Japan.

During the 90s Yonehara’s work with the iconic Egg Magazine was instrumental in the emergence of 'kogyaru' (Japanese schoolgirl) culture into the global consciousness.

Yonehara’s signature 'lo-fi sexy' photographic style was established though a collection of erotic Fujifilm 'cheki' shots for Smart Girls with some of Tokyo’s hottest models. The unprecedented success of his first book, a folio of these Smart Girl portraits, bestowed him instant fame.

It was at this point that Yonehara’s sphere of influence became global, with brands such as American Apparel 'appropriating' his unique photographic style for use in advertising campaigns. A new genre of editorial photography was born, founded on Yonehara’s instant Polaroid style.

In 2007 Yonehara launched the online publication cexwork.com which blends erotic art with blogs by influential photographers, friends and tastemakers from around the world. Yone has spent recent years exploring themes of eroticism, continuity within discontinuity and the power of repetition in a series of acclaimed photographic exhibition. A Creative Director sought by fashion labels, music groups and advertising agencies around the world, Yonehara brings a unique aesthetic, vision and Japanese pop-culture sensibility to the world of art.
In September 2010 Backwoods Gallery is honored to be hosting 'Shake That Ass' by Yasamasa Yonehara, an exhibition of original photography and installations.
