The David B. Smith Gallery is very pleased to present As Evidenced..., a solo exhibition by Christina Empedocles. As Evidenced... will feature Empedocles' highly realistic two-dimensional drawings as well as new three-dimensional work and a site-specific installation. Empedocles is currently featured in the October issue of American Art Collector Magazine, and her work has been recently acquired by very influential and important collectors. We invite you to take this opportunity to see, enjoy and acquire her work.
The exhibition will open Friday, October 1, 2010 and run through Saturday, October 30, 2010. Please join us for a reception with the artist on Friday, October 1, from 7 to 10pm.

These drawings and paintings combine the very best of traditional naturalist art with surprising touches of pop art and contemporary postmodernism. Empedocles draws from a background and love of geology and ornithology, and tries to be as realistic as possible. She captures images from photographs and memorabilia, placing the images in kaleidoscope patterns and juxtaposing them against white space, bent pages and tape - so realistic you could almost reach out to remove them from the paper. And yet, it is the disconnect between the representation of the image and the understanding of reality that makes her work so unusual and so distinctive. Here is a masterful artist whose reflection of reality exceeds our expectations, and she invites us to contrast that reality with idealized representations and images.

Empedocles uses images of birds, animals, people and personal memorabilia in her work. From comic strips to concert tickets to images of celebrities, Empedocles, herself, describes her work as "obsessive realism," mixing idealized images and reality in a unique perspective. By folding and cutting images, using sculpture, painting and collage, she records personal moments and impressions with both a photographic and impressionistic quality. Her work is the result of hours of looking. As Colorado art critic and writer Leanne Haase Goebel writes in an essay prepared for this exhibition, "Drawing allows her to record these artifacts with more detail than can be captured in a photograph. Her documentation is as exact and purposeful as she can make it, and serves to monumentalize the moments that they represent." Empedocles' work is personal and visually inviting, and represents a unique perspective that challenges the viewer to separate the rendered image from the real.

Christina Empedocles was born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She earned her BA in studio art and geology from Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio and her MFA in painting from California College of the Arts, San Francisco, California. In 2008, Empedocles was awarded a public commission at the University of California, San Francisco for the Mission Bay Campus Community Center Mural. Her work has also been featured in Manifest's International Drawing Annual, Studio Visit Magazine, Color & Color, and American Art Collector Magazine. She currently shows in Denver, San Francisco and New York.
