Spoke Art is proud to present: Urban Osmosis

Spoke Art is proud to present:
Urban Osmosis
Opening Reception: Friday, December 31st (New Years Eve) 2010
7PM-Midnight (21+ strictly enforced)
On View December 31 - January 31, 2011

Spoke Art is proud to present Urban Osmosis, an immersive exploration into our ever changing environment and landscape.

Ending our three month block of shows at Lopo Gallery, Spoke Art closes out 2010 with an ambitious showing of work by an impressive roster of emerging and established street and fine artists. Featuring three separate rooms of site-specific works and two floor-to-ceiling walls of free form wheatpastes, Urban Osmosis goes beyond your standard street art show to present a selection of captivating installations and selected indoor/outdoor works.

Shark Toof is arguably one of the most ambitious and versatile street artists currently working in the Los Angeles area. In 2010 he has shown with fine art gallery LeBasse Projects, cultural mecca Barracuda and now legendary wheatpaste show “Marxist Glue”. His first monograph will be released in 2011. For Urban Osmosis, Shark Toof will be traveling up to San Francisco for a presentation of two and three dimensional works as well as an ambitious street campaign.

Eddie Colla and D Young V are two of the Bay Area’s fastest rising stars in the street art scene. Eddie Colla’s politically driven works have been featured in numerous publications such as the New York Times, Giant Robot Magazine and Shepard Fairey’s Art for Obama book. D Young V’s post apocalyptic imagery and gritty style have earned him multiple shows with San Francisco powerhouse White Walls, where he’ll have a solo show in 2011. For Urban Osmosis, Eddie Colla and D Young V will be joining forces to present a series of collaborative works which will be presented in an installation heavy manner. These two artists will be taking over an entire room of the gallery for their installation.

GATS is one of the West Coast’s most prolific and rampant graffiti artists. His iconic characters litter the landscape from coast to coast and have been spotted in seven different countries around the world. For this show, GATS and EndlessCanvas.com will be curating their own room of the gallery where they’ll be presenting the work of GATS alongside notables Ras Terms, Safety First, Nina, Dead Eyes, Cuss and Political Gridlock.

Kelly Towles is an internationally acclaimed artist living and working in the Washington DC area. In 2006, Towles not only participated in Wooster Collective’s historic Spring Street Project but also curated his own show “Wall Snatchers” in Washington DC, a show that featured the likes of Faile, Bask and Tes One. Since then, Towles has shown throughout the United States at galleries such as 1988 in Los Angeles as well as Yosi Sergant’s Manifest Hope and Manifest Equality shows in Denver, DC and Los Angeles. For this show, Towles will be traveling to San Francisco where he will be taking over a whole room of the gallery for a site specific installation.

In addition to the multiple installations throughout Lopo Gallery, Urban Osmosis will be spilling out into the adjoining Space Gallery. For this aspect of the show, Los Angeles based artists, ABCNT and Cryptik will be joining SF legends Chor Boogie, Eon75, Sfaustina, Hugh Leeman and Zoltron in a varied selection of original works on plywood and other media.

Finally, two floor-to-ceiling walls of the gallery will be devoted to impromptu wheat pasting, allowing all artists in the show to work off each other in an open dialogue of homemade glue and collaboration. Following the show’s opening, the collaborative wall will be removed and reinstalled on the streets of San Francisco.

Giant Robot Presents: Zen Garage

Zen Garage
December 30 - February 13
Japanese American National Museum

Opening Reception: Thursday, December 30th, 5-9pm

As part of its continuing “Salon Pop” series, Giant Robot and the Japanese American National Museum will unveil the concept exhibition, Zen Garage, developed in collaboration between the National Museum and Eric Nakamura of Giant Robot, on December 30, 2010 and running through February 13, 2011. The display will open from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on December 30 at the National Museum in Little Tokyo in downtown Los Angeles.

The organizers summarized their inspiration for the show as follow: “The concept of Zen has been thwarted by popular culture in the form of awkward connotations and new ‘urban’ meanings. Its basic meaning in our new world is essentially a ‘pure focus.’ Likewise, a garage is no longer just a place where one parks their vehicle. Today’s garage can also function as a place of inspiration, development, and creation. With these words together, we bring you Zen Garage.“

Zen Garage will feature three innovative creations illustrating various facets of contemporary aesthetics, lifestyles, and cultural backgrounds:

The Super Famicom Car, a retro video game inspired by a converted Scion xB that utilizes projectors from both the front and rear to play video games. Its conversion includes sound making doors, a cartridge starter key, and controllers for each passenger. Designed by Giant Robot's Eric Nakamura and fabricated by Onimotorworks Len Higa, the car includes a custom video game, “Return of the Quack” featuring art by Matt Furie, programming by Chevy Ray Johnston, and game consulting and co-producing by Adam Robezzoli.

David Choe's custom Monster Scion xB exemplifies his aerosol street style as well as his larger than life perspective. A muralist and graphic artist, his work can be found on walls from Los Angeles to Vietnam. He is known as much for his exaggerated vulgarity as for his aesthetic sensibilities. An avid drummer, Choe keeps a drum kit in the bed of this Monster Scion xB that he played to an audience at Miami's Art Basel in 2006.

Shinya Kimura's Spike is not only a motorcycle, it's a work of art. Inspired by his imagination, Kimura creates functional art by infusing his philosophy and aesthetic values into his sculpturally unique and rolling designs. Kimura believes that the motorcycle represents in its form barbarism, vulnerability, and ephemeral beauty. By exposing the inner qualities of these machines Kimura instinctively creates machines that are an extension of the soul.

Dran "I LOVE MY WORLD" New book

This is the New Dran's book
Dran - I LOVE MY WORLD

« I love my world » is the 6th book by Dran.
An artist of our time, Dran bluntly sketches the world and points
his satirical paint brush at the society we live in.

His images speak for themselves , with clean and precise lines,
and an intelligent false naviety.

Without ever sinking into a lecturing tone, Dran invites the audience into his sharp world blending humour and finesse, a real visual treat.
