David Benjamin Sherry "Form Forming Formation" exhibition at OHWOW

David Benjamin Sherry
Form Forming Formation

Opening Reception Saturday, April 30, 2011
6-9pm

OHWOW is pleased to announce a solo presentation of David Benjamin Sherry's recent work that studies concepts of geometry, science, color, materiality, and the course of change. This exhibition, titled Form Forming Formation, includes both traditional color prints and photographic collage work. Through the artist's analog approach to producing images, he examines aspects of arrangement and the visual results of alchemical and light analysis.

With his photographically based constructions (Solar System In Blood System, 2011), Sherry explores specified geometric formations, based on the mathematical design of our planet and solar system. Also referencing crop circle phenomenon, these rectilinear configurations aim to address the varied changes Earth undergoes. The work also serves to chronicle this moment in history, and to raise awareness of the natural world around us, through a visual combination of minimal form and complex pattern.

Sherry's series of highly saturated chromogenic prints, depicting expressive rock-like structures, continue the dialogue between object and interpretation. Sculptures painstakingly created over time, then later photographed as in Royal Ruin Ultramarine Umbilical Fiend Fallen Cobalt Core, 2011, provoke an explanation of how and why these seemingly figurative forms evolved into abstracted artifacts, and are now frozen in a moment. The anthropomorphic imagery deals with ideas of evolution and shift - the systematic process of alteration and the aesthetic conclusion of transformation.

These contrasting bodies of work create a tension between each other, while they simultaneously begin to draw parallels between Earth's properties and human existence. Sherry not only uses photography as a documentation of fact, but also as an expression of an unknown future. Each monochromatic image is then both an examination and a certainty, questioning the genesis of how thoughts become reality and illustrating the result of that action into form.

David Benjamin Sherry is a New York-based artist, with a graduate degree from Yale University. This is his first solo exhibition with OHWOW. His work is shown nationally and abroad, including recent exhibitions at The Fireplace Project, East Hampton, NY; Aspen Art Museum, Aspen, CO; Garage Center for Contemporary Art, Moscow, Russia; and PS1/MOMA Contemporary Art Center, Long Island City, NY.

Jonathan Zawada "Free Dumb" at Vallery

Jonathan Zawada
Free Dumb

April 28 - June 2, 2011
Opening: April 28th - 8pm

In contemporary environments most mark-making that we see is a product of commercial rather than personal expression, it is the manifestation of the desires and interests of a group of people whereas historically, both in a social and an art context, mark-making was the product of personal expression of an individual. 'Freedumb' is an exploration of this divergence in two parts. The first part is a series of graphic, illustrated posters that utilize modern, mass market oriented image production techniques and a modern design language to communicate personal ideas, values and feelings. In contrast, the second part consists of a selection of programming based images that are the result of his attempts to strip away his controlled and methodical approach to image making, leaving the resulting images very much defined by the tool itself and reminiscent of cave paintings or primal landscapes.

Jonathan Zawada is an internationally renowned graphic designer and creative director who works across the music, publishing, fashion and corporate industries from his home in Sydney, Australia. Catching the collective eye of the design world with his album cover for The Presets’ Apocalypso in 2008, Jonathan has since created a breadth of work for clients including Ksubi, Surface to Air, RVCA, Nylon, Coca Cola and BMW. He has won numerous design awards including an ARIA and a British D&AD award, participated in judging panels for the likes of AWARD and presented at several conferences, including AGDA and Semi Permanent. Jonathan has become best known for his varied approach to the discipline of design, his personal ventures (including the mathematical style guide, Fashematics) and his projects as one third of TRU$T FUN!, which include an accessories range and the hit fashion comic, Petit Mal!

Running parallel to Jonathan’s career as a graphic designer is his work as a practicing visual artist, with which he participates in exhibitions regularly. His smooth illustrations demonstrate his uncanny understanding of depth and perspective, with a play on dimension that never compromises the credibility of the end result. Jonathan has had three solo exhibitions at Monster Children Gallery in Sydney and frequently contributes his work in group shows throughout the world. In late 2010 he opened his first solo show in the USA, "Over Time" at Prism Gallery in Los Angeles included his signature pencil drawings as well as a new foray into large scale oil paintings. His work is now placed in various art collections including that of Sir Elton John. Currently Jonathan is working towards an exhibition of new work to be exhibited at Frieze Art Fair 2011.

Katrin Fridriks "Leak of Information" solo exhibition at Circleculture Gallery

Katrin Fridriks
Leak of Information

Opening Reception: on the 28th of April 2011, from 7 pm
The exhibition takes place from the 28th of April to the 28th of May 2011

Have you ever had this odd feeling that they do not tell us everything, that some elements of the story are deliberately hidden? Either the lie is too big to be swallowed or the truth is so well concealed that the affair is known a long time after, thanks to people who have led an investigation, decoding messages and in many case have fought against a system. This is what “Leak of Information” means and with what it deals. The bells are ringing: (public) awareness!

Leak of Information is metallic, just like our technology-based contemporary time. With a new well-defined colorimetric using “silver, gold, steel, cooper, aluminium” as backgrounds/shadows, drawing from platforms/heart of planet earth, Fridriks is taking us deeper. Playing with colors and their own reflects, she is casting a new light on our society and its dynamics. Moreover, the enlargement in size and shape of her drippings heightens the movement of her kinetic abstract paintings, giving a rhythm and a stronger denseness. Displaying her artworks on different supports and materials such as round-shaped canvas, poly gravure papers, through wires and cables, the exhibition is rich and complex.

In black & white dominance, controversial themes are tackled, linked to political and human aspects of our current situation. The genetic classification of society is explored by the “Molecular Spaces” series: black paintings “Gene&Ethics”, a reversed animal skull as sculpture defining today’s illegal cloning research and white “Stendhal syndrome” installation.

Mass and over-communication disguise and erase information as easily as “tippex” crayon plexi installation does help to rewrite a story. Whereas pop artists substituted soup and beer cans for the more traditional fruits, flowers or books of the Still Life “16th century” paintings, Fridriks, with her “Whistleblower” installation, highlights their complex iconographical significance spreading moral “messages” through a technological bunch of flowers, metaphor of our over connected society where codes and subtle information are still in use.

Fridriks reviews things from scratch, she does not let us labour under illusions, but she is drawing the idea for awareness of not underestimating “mothernature”, like her recent color-saturated paintings, “Peace of cake”.

Katrin Fridriks, born 9 August 1974 in Reykjavík (Iceland), is a conceptual painter. Having spent many years in several countries, on different continents gave her a certain open-mindedness and cultural wealth which can be felt on the canvas: a clever mix of the wilderness of her native Iceland, abstract expressionism, minimalism - spearhead of the Bauhaus -, a combination of calligraphic work, tribute to the expertise of the Far East, graffiti, a controlled and thorough pop culture colorimetric. Her passion for architecture inspired her to create conceptual installations still using canvas and paint. Beyond her resolutely modern pictorial expression, Katrin Fridriks is continuing her research into matter and color with the avowed intent to place technique at the service of artistic expression. Creating new perspectives, her work brings an innovative dimension to abstraction.

Opening: April 28th from 7PM

Young Parisian artist, Fakir has made his way thru collectors' hearts for a couple years with his awesome toy customs. He's the mastermind behind the LapinQbiq DIY toy that he also self-produced. Illustrator, chara-design, painter and toymaker, he caught into his works the energy of his visual references in order to offer us an inspired anthology of impetuous characters. With a pure and clear graphic processing and influences from cartoon, graffiti, mangas or tattoo, the world of Fakir is incredibly fresh and surprisingly skilled. For his first solo exhibition, you are invited to discover artworks inspired by Japanese culture, with revanchist cephalopods, brawling cats, not-so-scary monsters, and many more whimsical characters declined on canvasses, custom toys or silk-screens. L’ATLAS "Punitions" exhibition at Skalitzers Contemporary Art

L’ATLAS | ‘Punitions’
Sat 30th April 2011 – Sat 28th May 2011

Opening Fri 29th April 2011, 19-22h

Seeking a universal form of urban communication, L'ATLAS invents a new language for global mega-cities, a language of signs as much as words. Beginning with the tag in the early 1990s, L’ATLAS went on to study Arabic calligraphy with classic and modern masters in Morocco, Egypt and Syria, taking particular inspiration from traditional Kufic calligraphy – the oldest calligraphic form of the Arabic scripts. The artist’s work has evolved towards a nameless writing which unites elements of painting and the tag with calligraphy. The rectangular shapes of the Kufic script are applied to the Latin alphabet to create his own typography, in which he writes his name as a labyrinth. Within his script, each shape is a letter, and each letter a shape - making each message both enigmatic and aesthetic.

Using the city as both a canvas and source, L’ATLAS works across a number of mediums including tape, spray paint and ink in his labyrinths, compasses, ‘ground print system’ series on manhole covers, ‘wandering canvases’ and classic tags.

La Punition (or Punishment in english) is a practice of graffiti to repeat indefinitely one’s name on a train or a wall. The form originated in the Parisian Metro at the beginning of the 1990s and subsequent artists have continued the practice. The term references the punishing of the surface, filling it with maximum impressions to erase the blank void and satisfy the space, and the punishments taken as a child, obliged to write lines on the school blackboard.

In ‘Punitions’, the artist presents a series of paintings inspired by the punishments of contemporary graffiti and the traditional form of Kufic calligraphy.

L’ATLAS’ work has been shown in galleries, festivals and collections around the world including London, New York, Berlin, Rome, New Delhi, Moscow, Beijing and Paris, with notable features at the Grand Palais, Fondation Cartier and Centre Georges Pompidou.

Join us with the artist for the opening night on Friday 29th April, including a live sound performance by TANC and dance performance by Lorenzo de Angelis.

CRASH, FREEDOM and RISK "Blurring the Lines" exhibition at Corey Helford Gallery

Corey Helford Gallery
Presents

“Blurring the Lines”
CRASH, FREEDOM and RISK

Curated by Roger Gastman

Opening Reception Saturday, April 30, 2011 from 7‑10pm
On View April 30 – May 18, 2011

On April 30, Corey Helford Gallery is pleased to present “Blurring the Lines”. The gallery’s first exhibition of graffiti art masters will showcase new works by CRASH, FREEDOM and RISK, curated by Roger Gastman, co-curator of MOCA’s “Art in the Streets” and co-author of HarperCollins newly released book “The History of American Graffiti”.

Bringing together three internationally-recognized graffiti artists who are concurrently featured in MOCA’s “Art in the Streets”, the first major US museum exhibition on the history of graffiti and street art, “Blurring the Lines” is a dynamic intersection of legendary East and West coast writers, where the lines that divide urban art and the new contemporary fine art world converge.

Renowned New York graffiti artists CRASH and FREEDOM will take over the main floor with recent works inspired by their iconic imagery that was shown along alongside art luminaries Jean-Michel Basquiat, FUTURA, and Keith Haring during the 80s. A master at subway art, CRASH was also one in a handful of New York writers who painted murals on the streets during the early 80s while exhibiting at prestigious galleries worldwide. At the same time, FREEDOM moved into a larger space in Manhattan, an abandoned two mile stretch of tunnel designed by Robert Moses that would become the legendary Freedom Tunnel, launching a sixteen-year run of world-famous paintings and drawings.

For his first major gallery exhibition in almost twenty years, FREEDOM notes, “While CRASH and I have worked together over the years, this will be our first gallery exhibition together since 1987, which is exciting.”

Upstairs in the loft, famed Los Angeles graffiti artist RISK, whose bus installation is prominently featured outside of “Art in the Streets” at The Geffen Contemporary at MoCA, will unveil “Styles for Miles”. Created on canvases constructed from vintage license plates, RISK’s new works represent his graffiti career as whole, tying together elements from his origins writing on freeway overpasses to his commercial projects and gallery and museum exhibitions.

Open to the public, the reception for “Blurring the Lines” will take place on Saturday, April 30 from 7 to 10pm, and the show will be on view until May 18, 2011.

Takeshi Murata "Get Your Ass to Mars" exhibition at Ratio 3

Takeshi Murata
Get Your Ass to Mars

April 29 – June 11, 2011

Opening reception: Friday, April 29, 2011, 6-8pm.

Ratio 3 is pleased to present Get Your Ass to Mars, new work by Takeshi Murata, on view from April 29 to June 11, 2011.

For this exhibition, Murata will present a new series of prints using imagery rendered entirely on the computer. As in his previous work, Murata uses objects that already exist in the world, playing with their inherent narratives and associations. Murata’s still lifes are composed of arranged objects such as VHS cassette tapes, fruit, skulls, cracked iPhones, musical instruments, and beer bottles. He places these objects in a virtual space that appears eerily real, accentuating their strange relationships with each other as they rest in a timeless abstract space. With these prints, Murata moves in the opposite direction of time-based video, emphasizing stillness, tension and pictorial illusion.

The gallery will also present the West Coast debut of “I, Popeye,” which premiered in 2010 in the exhibition ‘Free’ at the New Museum, New York. By animating Popeye in three dimensions, Murata’s personal interpretation of Popeye casts a dark yet humorous shadow on the iconic cartoon character. As in his previous videos, Murata’s deft control of the image draws the viewer into moments of both wonder and confusion.

Sweet Toof "Dark Horse" solo show at Factory Fresh

Sweet Toof
Dark Horse

Opening April 29th, 7-10pm
On view till May 22nd

Having chewed up the streets of London’s east end, British artist Sweet Toof takes a bite out of the Big Apple with his first New York solo exhibition, Dark Horse. Revealing a new series of original works, Sweet Toof’s Trojan Horse greets the city that never sleeps ‘til Brooklyn at the freshest factory in town.

Like the Dark Horse himself, Sweet Toof has risen up the ranks as a graffiti artist throughout 80s and 90s England, where his letterforms and street styles have evolved alongside a rigorous academic practice as a realist painter and sculptor. Heavily influenced by the Vanitas paintings of sixteenth century Europe, Mexican Day of the Dead, Subway Art, and the underground comics of Vaughn Bodé, his characteristic gummy chompers are a true mash-up of street and studio.

Now, the anonymous face that launched a thousand teeth unleashes the beast and charges forward once again—with a fleet of new works and an army of horsemen braced to paint New York by storm. It’s a call to arms in the battle for free expression: join forces, or else just grin and bear it.

Kruella D'Enfer "Memories of The Future" Solo show at Carhartt Lisboa

MEMORIES OF THE FUTURE
First Solo show by Kruella D'Enfer

29/04 - 29/05

Opening April 29th
until May 29th.

MEMORIES OF THE FUTURE is the result of Angela Ferreira aka Kruella D'Enfer fascination and obsession with the occult, supernatural world and about the idea of having the past and the future written in the form of enigmatic symbols. This idea of following a destiny path in the cosmos, in the cards, in the palm of your hand, led to a study of this visual universe, from where came the characters who dwell in her illustrations and which dominate the pieces that are exposed at Carhartt.

Kruella D'Enfer proposes in this project to reinterpret these symbols, rewriting somehow her future through an unknown universe in the tarot cards, creating a unique language that will make us travel through hidden places of our mind, creating memories of the future with her illustrations...

The works presented in this exhibiton are original, hand-painted with a mixed media technique, exclusively for this show.

Stolenspace presents "The Reign Of Pink" by Buff Monster

The Reign Of Pink
By Buff Monster

29.04.11 - 29.05.11

Thursday 28th April, 6-9pm

StolenSpace is proud to present the premier London solo show from renowned Californian street artist Buff Monster. Featuring paintings on board, installation work and also the release of a limited edition print.

Celebrating 10 years of the king of pink Buff Monster has created a brand new body of work expanding on and revisiting familiar themes that he has become synonymous with. The artist has become famous for his signature candy pink bubbles, drips, ice cream sundaes, breasts and Japanese-inspired cutesy winged characters (also called Buff Monsters) which bring a smile to the face. As well as his highly collectable fine art paintings Buff Monster is known all over the world for his collectible toys and design projects.

‘I’ve always painted squirts and boobs and drips, and I’ve always considered them landscape paintings; oozing landscapes. Of course, I use a very limited color palette: Buff Monster pink, along with a couple other shades of custom-mixed pink, and white, black and grays. For me, color is very important and I think that using a very limited palette serves to distill the essence of the expression. Formally, the paintings are rendered with great detail and are created in the superflat method of painting. I take great care to keep the paintings as flat as possible; making sure the surfaces is as flat and perfect as I think is appropriate. I use very fine sandpaper along the way to guarantee a smooth surface’

Buff Monster lives in Hollywood and cites heavy metal music, ice cream and Japanese culture as major influences. The color pink, a symbol of confidence, individuality and happiness, is present in everything he creates.

Buff Monster’s creative endeavors began by putting up thousands of hand-silkscreened posters across Los Angeles and in far-away places. His frequent poster missions developed into a productive street art career, and he now works on fine art paintings, collectible toys and select design projects. The Buff Monster's primary canvas is the city of Los Angeles. Here he uses his signature ice cream sundaes, breasts and little winged characters (also called Buff Monsters) as a candy coating for the less glossy surfaces of the City of Angels. LA is also home to the porn industry, and The Buff has been known to paint directly onto the bodies of porn stars at Hustler shoots. He’s also painted a room at the Hotel Des Arts in San Francisco.

Plasticina presents "After The Utopia" at Acquire Arts Gallery

Plasticina presents "After The Utopia" a view on the Portuguese Freedom Day
Opening: Thursday April 28th, 6pm - 9pm
Exhibition Open: 29th April - 6th May, 1pm - 6pm

In the early hours of April 25th 1974, an historic moment was about to happen in the Portuguese capital Lisbon...

At 12:20am the song “Grândola Vila Morena” by Zeca Afonso was broadcasted on the national radio as a signal to start a Revolution that overthrew a fascist regime and introduced democracy for the first time in Portugal. This day marked a social and political turn in a country that for 48 years lived in the shadows of an authoritarian regime and could now enjoy freedom. The people danced, drank, sang, hugged, kissed and jumped… A unique day and a new dawn.

This exhibition marks the commission of a group of new artists given old stories/form. Each artist has been given an iconic symbol or moment of the time to re-interpret. Their aim is to explore the depth of shared meaning and experience, and the force and passion which typify this event in Portuguese culture. The documents given include posters, photos and newspapers. Each piece was used as a source of inspiration for a new creation. Both will be exhibited side by side, giving a perspective to the audience of what was made in the past and the creative response, preserving these iconic symbols within the work of a new breed of artists with different experiences and different concerns.

Akacorleone, Aurora Pavón, Catrine Bodum, David Oliveira, Fidel Évora, Francisco Vaz, Jucapinga, Kruella D'Enfer, Marie Err, Maria Imaginário, Michal Dziekan, Mr. Clement, Mr. Phomer, Sérgio Pereira.

In 2011, the sons of the Revolution live free but with new issues... An acute economic crisis that shows no sign of abating, new cuts in various sectors, from culture to education. The dreams of utopia in the 1974 art are now viewed differently according with a new World reality. Do these dreams of an ideal future still make sense in a World where everything changes so rapidly?

"After The Utopia" documents and re-documents one of the most important moments in the history of Portugal.

The idea of interpreting what was made in the 70’s and re-inventing it in the eyes of a new generation raised a new challenge as there's certain echoes and parallels between the period that is documented and the “new struggles” of today’s reality.

BODA 910 Photo exhibition by LANDRY at E8 in Madrid

BODA 910
Photo exhibition by
LANDRY
