Marty Walker Gallery presents a site-specific gallery installation of murals and paintings by award-winning artist Wayne White, known for his signature punchy word combos injected into the “sofa-art” scenery of found thrift store lithographs.

For this exhibition, White says “I’m expanding my word paintings in space and narrative, using murals and multi-part paintings that tell longer stories about the human condition—you know—vanity, ego, hubris, all that stuff I usually get the laughs with, but also sense memory pieces.” Pulling from his study of traditional landscape painters, cartooning and set design, White mixes irony with allegory to create yet another humorous and unpredictable environment that one can only fully experience in person within the gallery’s site specific exhibition.

In addition, Beauty Is Embarrassing, a full-length documentary on the creative life of Wayne White recently premiering at SXSW, has received rave reviews from Wired, Village Voice, Variety, the Hollywood Reporter, and numerous blogger posts, as well as appearing on Last Call with Carson Daly. The artist’s strange and mesmerizing career is also illustrated in the recent monograph Wayne White: Maybe Now I’ll Get the Respect I So Richly Deserve, published by Todd Oldham. Co-creator of Emmy-Award winning Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, White has also art-directed television shows, music videos (Peter Gabriel’s Big Time, The Smashing Pumpkins’ Tonight Tonight), and advertisements. This mega-talented artist’s paintings can be found in numerous private collections as well as the New Museum of Contemporary Art in NY, the Detroit Institute for Art, and the Weisman Art Foundation. The artist has an upcoming exhibition at the Taubman Museum in Roanoke, Virginia in May 2012. Wayne White lives and works in Los Angeles.
