Beastie Boys "Kings Of Rock" exhibition at Rush Arts Gallery

Kings of Rock: photos commemorating the Beastie Boys by Sunny Bak, Rush Artist Management photos by Talib Adbul Haqq and graphic works of Cey Adams. Presented by Russell Simmons, Cey Adams, and Bill Adler will be on view at Rush Arts Gallery April 12th – 14th 2012.

This exhibition will be accompanied by a book discussion and signing of Def Jam Recordings: The Last Great Record Label a book by Bill Adler, Def Jam's founding publicist, and Dan Charnas, author of "The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop" (New American Library 2010). Cey Adams, the label’s founding creative director, designed this book which explores the fashion, art, and culture of Hip Hop.

To commemorate the Beastie Boys induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 14th this exhibition bring together 11 photographs of the Beastie Boys’ early career by Sunny Bak. Bak, born in NY to Chinese-Indonesian and Korean parents, developed her candid documentary style of photography in the downtown New York Scene in the 1980’s. Included in the exhibition is one of her most seminal photographs of the Beastie Boys, which was used on the Licensed to Ill album. She currently lives and works in LA shooting celebrity portraiture, and producing film and television.

Cey Adams, Def Jam’s founding Creative Director, transforms graphic design iconography into fine art. On view at RUSH Arts Gallery will be two large paintings, both Super, and Fresh. Both works combine paper collage techniques with graphic design, and painting to form strong balanced works on canvas. The eye popping fresh works inject energy into the space by using bold color, pattern, and hip iconic language.

Talib Adbul Haqq, is one of the founding photographers of Hip Hop, and the founder of Wadeva Images. On view at Rush Arts Gallery are some never before seen images of the early days and many Rush Artists Management first's. Talib Haqq, began shooting Many of Russell Simmons Management clients in 1981, and Talib's touted as Hip-Hops first Photographer and Visual historian. The Talib Abdul Haqq method of Iconography has been used to immortalize the likes of LL Cool J, Run-DMC, Kurtis Blow, Whodini, as well as, a number of other Rush Management artists, which included Russell Simmons himself. Best known for the cover of Run-DMC, The debut album, and a myriad of other historically important images, Haqq would like you to examine what his eye has embraced. Motto: To record, preserve, and archive the creative spirits of Black music. Witness these moments in reflection, as Talib Abdul Haqq allows us to peek through his lens during this Celebration at the Rush Arts Gallery.
