Shooting Gallery is pleased to present artist Samuel Lowder’s latest solo show, Time Machine, opening May 12th, 2012 from 7-11 pm. The exhibition is free and will be open to the public for viewing through June 2nd, 2012.

Reminiscent of light box movie posters from the thirties through the fifties, the works of Time Machine take us back to earlier eras, to look at classic cinematic themes with a fresh eye. Lowder’s pop art stylings guarantee sharply-executed collage work, filled with transparent layers and clearly delineated figures. Lowder began working on Time Machine as a stepping stone to a whole new kind of work, and the beginnings of this evolution are evident in the sophisticated color matches seen throughout the pieces while hints of a more abstract styling add an element of playfulness.

Time Machine consists of ten paintings, varying in size from 18x24” to 50x40,” as well as additional paper pieces. Each piece suggests it is only a still of a much larger narrative, with final outcomes that the viewer cannot be sure of. In “Crying Shame” a woman at the center of the canvas is frozen in a scream, confronted by a devil we can only infer by its shadow in the background. Even more terrifying than the devil is the expression Lowder gives the man standing beside the woman, a look that communicates a complete loss of hope. Another, different, couple is featured in a more lighthearted painting: aligned side by side, a boy and girl are both shown catching the other’s gaze, in a nod to the charm of nostalgic romance.

Samuel Lowder, known as “FrePrs” during his early 90’s graffiti days in L.A., has continually developed his art in new directions. No longer employing freehand graffiti, the artist uses layers of stencils to make an always evolving pop art and has shown his work in major cities around the nation.
