Ben Venom "I Call The Shots" exhibition at Guerrero Gallery

Ben Venom
I Call The Shots

Opening Reception: Saturday, June 9th 7-11pm
Show Dates: June 9th – July 7th, 2012

Guerrero Gallery is pleased to present “I Call The Shots,” an exhibition featuring the works of Ben Venom. Venom’s work combines the traditional handcraft of quilting with the extreme musical genre of heavy metal that walks a fine line between seriousness and utter pandemonium. His intricate quilt designs of metal lyrics, war birds and griffins made from re-appropriated heavy metal shirts infuse his quilts with just the perfect amount madness to swaddle you in chaotic comfort and induce mosh pit laced dreams. “I Call The Shots” will feature a body of work that includes pillows and quilts made from used blue jeans and metal t-shirts that have been mostly donated by friends of the artist, and will also showcase embroidered jean jackets in the style of motorcycle club jackets that address the similarities between motorcycle gangs and the punk rock metal scene. San Francisco-based heavy metal bands Hazzard's Cure and Dalton, whose t-shirts are included in Venom’s work, will be performing during the opening reception.

Venom holds an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. He was recently interviewed on NPR’s All Things Considered, was included in the November 2011 issue of ARTFORUM Magazine, and was selected for Bay Area Now 6 at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. His work has been shown both nationally and internationally including: Neurotitan Gallery (Germany), Wolverhapmton Gallery (England), Guerrero Gallery, Western Exhibitions, and THIS LA. Venom has lectured at California College of the Arts, Burnaway Organization, and Untitled Gallery. He is currently teaching classes in printmaking at the San Francisco Art Institute, Kala, and Workshop SF.
