Lars Holdhus "High estimates" exhibition at Johan Berggrenn Gallery

Lars Holdhus
High estimates

Opening: February 22 2013, 6–8 p.m.
Exhibition period ends: March 23

It is a commonplace observation that work expands so as to fill the time available for it's completion. Thus, an elderly lady of leisure can spend the entire day in writing and despatching a postcard to her niece at Bognor Regis. An hour will be spent in finding the postcard, another in hunting for spectacles, half-an-hour in a search for the address, an hour and a quarter in composition, and twenty minutes in deciding whether or not to take an umbrella when going to the pillar-box in the next street. The total effort which would occupy a busy man for three minutes all told may in this fashion leave another person prostrate after a day of doubt, anxiety and toil.

- C. Northcote Parkinson, Parkinson’s Law, The Economist, Nov 19 1955

What would the busy young man do for the rest of his day? This could be the question asked by Holdhus for his first solo presentation as he investigates the most trivial, yet to the eye, non-visible entities of human organizational vocation and culture. Dust.

A young man’s need to produce paper work has probably diminished in relation to a growing digitized world where dust is still around us. The exhibition investigates and links the scientist’s approach towards his immediate everyday surroundings and the methodologies needed to navigate in time and space.

In an almost dust free environment, we witness how the amount of time which one has to perform a task is the amount of time it will take to complete that task. Holdhus echoes Parkinson’s Law of Triviality and shows abilities to encounter knowledge in an unorthodox way by searching for the non-narrative in a narrative manner.

When having written the postcard all too fast, Holdhus sets out on his exploration beyond the narrative. Digging deep into the trivial, he manages to show how an obsession with organizational structures may result in fluctuating anxiety and doubt.
